STOCK MARKET REPORTS RISE OF 15 BILLION REPORTED CLIMB REFLECTS INCREASING EARNINGS AND DIVIDENDS FOR MOST COM- PANIES By CLAUDE, A. JAGGER Associated Press, Financial Editor NEW YORK, .. Dec, ,.24.—The quoted yalue of shares listed in the New, York . Stock . Exchange} swelled $15,000,000,000 in 1936, continuing with only occasional interruptions the persistent ascent} to higher prices that began in; March, 1935, The average price of all shares listed in this principal market re-j covered to the highest point since early 1931, while industrials alone} reached 1930 levels. Analysts remarked that the re- covery in share prices added a} new and strange chapter to finan-{ cial history in that it was accom- p'ished with negligible increase int the use of credit. j Margin Requirements Stiffer Twice during the year, the Federal Reserve Board stiffened! margin requirements, and on August 15 pushed up the reserve requirements of member banks, eliminating more than $1,000,000,- 000 of idle bank funds which might have been used as a basis of, credit expansion. Nevertheless, prices continued] to rise as cash buying poured into; the market. On December 1, total; borrowings by members of the ex- change, at $984,004,702, were up! only $138,000,000 from a year earlier. During the same period,} the total quoted value of listed: shares swelled to $60,019,557,197,} from $44,950,590,351. The Stock Exchange said in its December bulletin that the rise! in the market in the last two years had approximately doubled the quoted value of shares, “a more rapid advance than any that took place during the bull market that reached its peak in 1929.” Foreign Funds A Factor A heavy influx of foreign funds into the New York money and in- vestment markets during the year, reflecting fears of currency de- valuation and armed conflict abroad, was widely regarded as a contrbiuting factor to the rise at | daughter of Charles Park; STUDENT GROUP {AUTO DRIVER ARRIVES IN CITY COME HOME TO SPEND HOLI.- DAY SEASON WITH RELA- TIVES AND FRIENDS Another group of students from}! educational _ institutions arrived this week to spend the holidays of the Yuletide season with relatives and friends and join in the many festivities which have been plan- ;ned for their homecoming. Her car first struck one which was parked in front of the Florida Motor Lines station. This car is said to be the property of D. T. Nisoff, of the Casa Marina Hotel. In the Elks Club a group was watching Sam Harris and Nestor Recio playing a game of chess when they heard a crash and start- ed for the street, Among the group was Sheriff K. O. Tompson, who, upon reach- img the sidewalk, found that -his car had been damaged by the im- pact of another, and started in pursuit. | Arriving at the Hotel Colonial jit was learned that Mrs, Baker’s car had struck two others, one the property of Berlin Sawyer, Jr., and the other an automobile be- longing to Delsee] Albury. Just as the Chrysler was turn- {ing from Duval onto Fleming street Chief Deputy Sheriff Ber- nard Waite and Deputy Leroy Torres jumped on the running board of the erratically driven ear and found Mrs. Baker to be ill. In the meantime Mrs, Baker’s relatives arrived on the scene and she was removed from the car and taken home for immediate med- ;ical treatment.
