ITH more of an opportunity to be a child than Hollywood has seen fit to give her since “The Little Col- onel,” Shirley Temple opened a re- turn engagement of “Dimples” at the Columbia last night. However, don't allow yourself to be misled by that statement, for the Temple's little girl is not completely allowed to be her age, for her bosses have discovered she has a peculiar piquancy when she acts like a scaled-down adult. Ac- cordingly, they still ask her to sing like Ethel Merman and dance like Bill Robinson and otherwise show her remarkable versatility in mimicry. It is all very imposing and all part of the money's worth which is ap- preciated even by those who would like to see little “Dollar Dimples” once more cast in a child’s part. It was Frank Morgan's turn this time to play opposite Shirley, and he does it with a pleasing absence of self-consciousness that characterizes the finished performer of Mr. Mor- gan's type.
