Interest and amortization called for $83,438 against $73,847 a year ago, leaving a net de- ficit for the month of $48,514 in com- parison with a $10,163 increase in September, 1935. For the first nine months of the | year Washington Gas operating reve- nues amounted to $4,914,910, a gain of $187.758 over the 1935 total. Oper- ating expenses, taxes and bad bills were $383,404 higher than last year, leaving mnet operating revenues of $1,139,169 against $1,334.815. Gross corporate income stood at $1,203,624 compared with $1,386,575 and interest and amortization required $701,351 against $654,488 and leaving a net income for the nine months of $502,273 as compared with $732,087, a drop of $229.814, but still a substantial profit for the period. The operating revenues of the two gas companies, during the first nine months of 1936, despite these reduced rates increased $238,- 460 over the corresponding period of 1935, due to the greater volume of gas sold, thereby reducing the de- crease in net income for the period to $235,659. Operating revenues in September amounted to $849,530, against $810,329. Operating expenses totaled $626,643, compared with $586,- 672, leaving net operating revenues of $222,887, in comparison with $223,657. Gross stood at $159,044, interest deductions called for $15,373, leaving & net income, or balance before divi- dends, of $143,671, as compared with $144,171 in September of last year. Washington was served by 208,856 telephones on September 30, 1936, a net gain of 1,797 over the previous month. On September 30, 1935, there were 197,226 telephones in service. ‘Telephone users in Washington made 23,186.000 calls in September, as com- pared with 20,524,000 during the same month in 1935. For the first nine months of this gear C. & P. operating revenues amounted to $7,890,084, well ahead of last year. Operating expenses also ad- vanced, leaving net operating rev- | enues of $2,285,051: Taxes called for $664,877. Gross reached the sum of $1,627,936, from which $133216 in interest was deducted, leaving a net income of $1,494,720, against $1.- 414,919 in the first nine months of 1935. Head Insurance Institute. The District of Columbia Life Un- derwriters’ Association's new Life In- surance Institute has been placed in charge of a Board of Trustees made up of some of the leading insurance men in the city, with J. E, McCombs chairman. The rest of the board in- cludes: Laurence H. Rigges, Roger L. Bald- win, Winthrop G. Batchelder, H. Law- rence Choate, John F. Cremen, James A. De Force, Ben A. Harlan, Vernon ‘W. Hollerman, Richard W. Griswold, Harold D. Krafft, Alma McCrum, the only woman member; J. Allen Maphis, Paul H. Primm, Earle W. Sapp and Morton H. Wilner. Several of these trustees are on the faculty, which has already been an- nounced. The purpose of the insti= tute is to make available authoritative, practical and complete instruction in life insurance and allied subjects. Class work will begin next Monday.
