Y. STOCK EXCHANGE |Greyhound Corp. Seeks Authority For Stock Issue By the Assoctated Press. The Greyhound Corp. of Chicago asked the Interstate Commerce Com- mission today for authority to issue $1,053,030 of 5!, per cent preference stock to be used for paying a dividend on the corporation’s common stock. Pointing to the Federal revenue act of 1936, which levies a graduated sur- tax on undistributed profits, the cor- poration said a cash distribution to stockholders of a large portion of un- distributed income to meet the re- quirements of the revenue act would impair cash reserves used for debt liquidation and improvements. The corporation said the plan of issuing stock in lieu of cash for -divi- dends would have the effect of trans- ferring $1,953,000 from the earned sur- plus account to the capital stock ac- count. Greyhound officials asserted the cor- poration would be liable fer a tax payment of between $280,000 and $320,000 of undistributed net income based on estimated net earnings for 1936 if the plan to issue stock in lieu of cash were not approved. The stock dividend, however, would be taxable by the Federal Government in the hands of the stockholder. NEW YORK, October 21 —Directors of Greyhound Corp., Chicago bus op- erators, today declared an extra divi- dend of $3 a share on the common stock payable in 5'; per cent prefer- ence stock. Precial Dispateh to The Star NEW YORK, October 31, —The re- co! in hardware sales set new records, since 1929, for some manu- facturers and wholesalers last month, and October shipments are equaling or exceeding the September rate. The cooler weather is stimulating retall buying. All-lines not actually out of season are doing well, and on some the gain has been phenomenal, Hardware Age will say tomorrow in its market sum- mary. “Both the early and current demand for stoves, and for house and kitchen furnishings have outrun ex- pectations. Bicycles are still selling many weeks ahead of their supply. Toys, gift items and sleds are moving out faster than last year. “Many manufacturers, in varied lines, are too busy to ship promptly, and shortages continue to annoy all distributors. Factories making con- sumer goods are operating at capacity, with output in some cases the highest on record. “The speed of the improvement nat- urally inspires some question whether the present rate of demand can con- tinue. However, sales reports from ail quarters indicate that the goods made have been selling, and that stocks are not piling up. The new commitments | of merchants ‘or Spring delivery show that they expect no recession. The buying power is coming from increased employment, larger farm income, and greater dividend payments, as well as from Government contributions. Thers is no great fear that the income from any of these sources will fall off “Prices on hardware lines have been firmed by recent advances in the base materials, particularly steel, and it is difficult to find staple lines where fourth-quarter costs are not well above the ‘lows’ of the year. Most advances | being announced are reasonably jus- tified by higher costs.” BOARD OF TRADE CUTS MARGINS FOR TRADERS CHICAGO, October 21 (#).—Di- | rectors of the Board of Trade yes- | terday reduced initial margins re- | quired on grain trading. Hereafter | the minimum will be 6 cents a bushel | instead of 8 cents on wheat, corn, | instead of 4 cents a bushel on oats.
