MARTIN'S HORSES CLOSE T0 SWEEP, Dark Hope Beaten by Nose. Favored Betty’s Buddy Is Late Scratch. AUREL, Md, October 17— Maryland and the District of Columbia divided the honors | before 15,000 fans when J. W. Y. Martin's Triple Action won the sixth running of the Maryland Fu- turity, and Fair Knightess, owned by Hobson C. McGhee of Washington, | landed the twenty-third renewal of | the Laurel, co-features of an eight- | race program contested over a muddy | track. | A nose is all that kept Owner | Martin, resident of Worthington Val- ley, Md., from sweeping both stakes. It was this slim margin that enabled Fair Knightess to win the Laurel from Martin'’s Dark Hope after they had run the mile in 1:39 1/5. But for a sixteenth of a mile in the stretch, Fair Knightess led throughout. During that short dis- tance shé was headed by Dark Hope, but came again to win by a nose. Back in third place came Elwood Sachenmaier's Roman Soldier, fa- vorite, Foul Claim Disallowed. © SOONER than the Laurel ended than Jockey Joe O'Malley rushed to the steward’'s pagoda to lodge a claim of foul against Charlie Kurt- singer, who handled Fair Knightess. | However, the stewards disallowed the | claim. i J. W. Y. Martin, whose Truly Yours won the 1934 running of the | Maryland Futurity, saw his Triple | Action capture the sixth renewal of the event, stepping 6 furlongs over & muddy course in 1:13 4,5 to pay | P $21.80. His score enriched Owner | Martin to the extent of $5470. Of that sum $500 was awarded Martin, due to his being the breeder of the bay gelded son of Canter and Black Momma. ¥ Joe O'Malley had Triple Action in hand for five-eighths, while A. G. Van- derbilt's Gay Balko and J. Y. Christ- mas’ Rough Time were fighting for the lead. Half way through the stretch, O'Malley sent Triple Action on top to win, driving from the Branncastle Farm's the Schemer, with Rough Time besting Gay Balko for third honors. Favorite is Withdrawn. ..T!fl: race lost much of its punch when Mrs. John Bosley, jrs, Betty's Buddy, favorite, was with- | drawn after being in the paddock and | having hundreds of tickets sold nn' his chances. Betty's Buddy was| found to be suffering from bucked shins by Dr. Henry J. Mchrth_er track veternarian, who informed the stewards. The latter ordered the colt scratched and all money wagered on | him was promptly refunded. Form players who have been tak-| % ing it on the chin throughout this meeting, suffered reverses in the day's | first three races. L. E. Ogle's Blind Brook won the mile and one-sixteenth opener from Ed Kane's Portden, favorite, follow- ing which Golden Reel, owned by Mrs. Randolph Scott, took the two-mile steeple chase from Gladys Whit- ney’s Rideaway, odds-on favorite. Another odds-on favorite tumbled when Mrs. R. A. Van Cliff's Morning | won the mile of the third in 140,/ with Cary T. Grayson's Ocean Roll, the public choice, second. The daily double pay-off on Blind Brook and Morning was $120.20. The stewards suspended Jockey L. Coffman for the remainder of the meeting for rough riding astride Moon Bide in today's sixth race. _— Dufferin Results By the Assoclated Press. H, October 17—Per- fectly handled by the veteran Joe Rosen, Phil Bieber's Chanc- ing held off all challengers to churn through the mud and capture the 11-16 mile General Green by half a length at Rockingham Park today. The 5-year-old son of Chance Play broke to the top with Col. W. A. Jones’ Boston Brook. He fnally left Boston Brook tied to the three- sixteenths pole and then held off Weston Adams’ fast closing Gallant Gay to complete the journey in 1:4825, Two and a half lengths back of Gallant Gay was the favorite, Sun Archer, with Watersplash out of it by another length. The winner paid $1590 and earned over $2,535 in added purse money. Mrs. Ray Pollard’s Fickle Chance got through on the rail to take the 6- furlong Keene Handicap secondary feature by half a length from My Colin as the pace-setting Happy Knot faded in the last furlong and dropped back to third, a head back of My Colin. C, OCTOBER 18, 1936—PART ONE. = [AXRIS SPORTS. ] N ochranes omment Selections for fast track at Laurel tomorrow. BEST BET—BOOTLESS, FIRST RACE—WARRIOR QUEEN, MARY KEEN, MORNING. ‘The manner in which WARRIOR QUEEN, a daughter of American Flag, in the Glen Riddle Farms Stable, won her recent outing at Havre de Grace, prompts us to give her the edge. She broke in front and led every step of the way, and in back of her at the finish were Morning, Phlox, Swift Ply and other good ones. MARY KEEN ap- pears to be the most formidable contender, SECOND RACE—TITIAN KIDDIE, BALCONY, ADAMS EVE, TITIAN KIDDIE, a filly that has won 6 of her 14 races this year, gave indications of returning to her best form Thursday by finish- ing a nose and a head in back of Iron Ire and High Torque. We be- lieve she is good enough to handle this band of cheap Maryland breds. THIRD RACE—CANPRA, CHAM- BERSBURGER, SEVEN STAR. After several disappoining Mary= land efforts, CANPRA, a gelded son of Canter, suddenly awakened the other day, but Pumice Stone came along and nipped him at the wire. He was off very poorly in that race and was forced to weave his way to contention before he could get going in his best stride. He just failed to get up. CHAM- BERSBURGER'S last was mighty impressive and he should down SEVEN STAR. FOURTH RACE—UVALDE, HI- SWEET, HARRY'S DREAM. UVALDE breezed to a smart victory in a 6-furlong test the other day and Monday he will be sent over the 1 mile and 75 yards’ dis- tance, In his winning effort he broke slowly and turned on some nifty speed in the stretch. From all indications will be better suited over the longer route. HI-SWEET was bothered in his race the other day, but before that he displayed corking speed to come from far back to win. FIPTH RACE—BOOTLESS, GENIE PALATINE, INFANTRY. ‘The majority of the horses in the E. R. Bradley Stable are in great condition, and this outfit will be represented by BOOTLESS. He showed one of his best races of the year several days ago at Laurel when he finished a nose in back of Piccolo, with Two Bob, Knight Warrior and Booming Guns back of him. A repeater of that would certainly win this. He can run over any kind of track. GENIE PALATINE showed a lot of foot in her winning route race recently and may furnish the contention. INFANTRY should take third money. SIXTH RACE—MANUAL, NITA, CREDULOUS. Although MANUAL is an ordi- nary plug, his recent winning race at Laurel cannot be overlooked, and on the strength of that we are picking him. In back of him were More Pep, Fogarty and Mad Frump, and we see nothing in here that classes with those steeds. PILLNITA possesses a lot of foot. SEVENTH RACE—WISE ADVO- CATE, MAD FRUMP, LITTLE ARGO. WISE ADVOCATE, a veteran that was sharpened up with a 6- furlong whirl yesterday, moves up to a 1'g distance, where he is better suited. That was his first test in a long time and it should have put him on sharp edge for this affray. He has beaten horses of similar ' caliber many times. MAD FRUMP will be dangerous, especially if the going is other than fast. PILL- Sportsman’s Park Entries for Tomorrow. By the Associated Press. EW YORK, October 17.—A victory for Mrs. J. D. Hertz's favored Count Arthur in the feature Continental Handicap and a new American record for wine ners by Trainer Hirsch Jacobs spote lighted the Metropolitan Jockey Club's get-away day program at Jamaica today. Count Arthur, favored in the bet- ting at 9 to 5, was hard-pushed to win by a length over Louis Strube's vastly improved filly, Rust. Third money went to T. B. Martin's Steel Cutter, five lengths back. Jacobs, the man who gave up pigeons for horses to become the country’s leading trainer for the last four years, saddled his 147th and 148th winners of the season in the first and third races, thereby eclipsing the old mark of 147 winners, held by Cowboy Irwin since 1923. Belshazzar was his victor in the opening event and Night Sprite in the third, both owned by Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs. Count Arthur was booted home by | Sammy Renick on one of the sloppiest tracks of the meet. He broke fast and set the pace, with Rust trailing, to the far turn. Then Rust spurted past and took over the lead by two lengths going into the stretch, only to falter and give way in the straightaway as Count Arthur came on under powerful urging to win going away. Rust paid 4-1 for place and Steel Cutter 2-1 for show.
