NEW YORK, September 21.—Oper- ations in the steel industry for the current week advanced 19 points to 74.4 per cent of capacity, the highest point since the record was begun in 1933, compared with 72.5 last week, the American Iron & Steel Institute estimates today. A month ago operstions averaged 725 per cent of capacity, while a year ago the rate was 48.9 per cent. Trade sources attributed much of the increase in steel activity to “covering” by manufacturers on items to be advanced In price for fourth quarter tonnage. It was also said attomobile demand is holding well, although orders from that quarter are still restricted during the Fall change= over in automobile designs. It was also pointed out that oper- ations in the tin plate branch of the steel industry continue at a high rate and bellef was expressed that tonnage of this type will break all records since 1928-9. This week's rate of operations topped the previous high this year of 74 per cent of capacity, reached in d. | the last week of June. SHORT-TERM SECUBITIES (Reported by Chas D. Barney & Co ) Bid.
