New life insurance written in Wash- ington in August dropped 5 per cent | below the record for August, 1935, the Sales Research Bureau at Hartford re- ported today. For the first eight months, howewer, business was 1 per cent above the policies written in the like 1935 period. ‘Washington was under the national average, which was off 1 per cent in August from last year. Virginia made a fine showing, a gain of 14 per cent over August, 1935, being reported. ‘West Virginia boosted business 10 per cent over last year, while the Caro- linas both reported gains of 9 per cent. Maryland experienced a drop of 3 per cent. August insurance sales in Washing- ton totaled $4,794.000. Maryland new business amounted to $6,554,000. Vir- ginia, $6,086,000; West virginia, $4.- 097,000; North Carolina, $5,602,000, and South Carolina, $2,852,000. August sales in the whole Nation totaled $451,- 612.000. Among leading cities Los Angeles made the best record, with an 8 per cent gain, followed by Chicago with a 1 per cent advance. New York came third. Detroit noted the exact same slump as Washington, while Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia and St. Louis fell below the record made here. Asa fule, the Western section of the coun- try made a better showing in August than the East. Convention Chairman Named. Daily average sales of grocery chain stores for August showed an increase of about 9 per cent in dollar volume, as compared with August, 1935, and were 10 per cent above the same month of 1934, according to prelimi- nary estimates of the Department of Commerce.
