September 12— The jagged shores of 34,000-acre Norris Lake and the adjacent moun- tain wilderness are being developed into & huge playground hy the Ten- nessee Valley Authority. A year ago the Government began work on the Northeastern Tennessee project as a spot for sportsmen and outdoor recreation. That was soon after the T. V. A. acquired a vast protective shoreline around the res- ervoir back of the 253-foot-high Norris Dam across tiny Clinch River. Two wilderness parks of several thousand acres each, created with the help of the National Park Service and C. C. C. enrolees, were opened to the public June 1. In one month they drew more than 10,000 visitors. Prepare to Stock Lake. On the glant reservoir, which fills tree-lined valleys of the Cumberland Mountains & distance of 70 miles from the dam, more than 30 private motor boats now ply. The T. V. A, in co-operation with the United States Bureau of Hatch- eries, built a large fish hatchery and a group of rearing pools. In a couple of years Norris Lake will be fully stocked with bass, bream and other fish. Big Bridge Park, containing 3,500 acres and located 12 miles above the dam and 24 miles northeast of Knoxville, is almost entirely sur- rounded by waters of Norris Lake. It is rugged and picturesque and at one point Norris reservoir can be seen 600 feet below. Swimming and Canoeing Provided. About 100 acres of the park have been developed as a concentrated recreational area, featured by a 45- acre lake formed by damming an arm of Norris Reservoir. This lake al- ready has been stocked with small- mouthed bass and bream. Swimming and canoeing are encouraged. Norris Park contains 3,887 acres and skirts Norris Lake 3 miles. It has 22 miles of trails for horseback riders and affords views of the Cum- berland and Great Smoky Mountains and the lake. Both parks have furnished vacation cabins which rent from $14 to $20 a week, recreational lodges and camp- ing grounds. Sam F. Brewster of the T. V. A. says other cabins will be bullt, A section of Norris Park is to be maintained in a wild state and stocked with deer, bears, wild turkey and quail. —_— More than 2,000 tons of sandstone cliffs crashed on the beach at Sid- mouth, England. Carabao, or Water Buffalo, Lives in Valley on Molokai, Reached Only From the Sea. HONOLULU, September 12.—The biggest wild game in the United Gtates is to be found in a tiny and precipi- tous valley on Molokai, Hawalian Islands, which is the first land out of San Francisco seen by travelers by alr or steamer. This wild game is carabao, or water buffalo, twice as big as an American bison. They were introduced a long time ago as work animals on & rice plantation in this valley, which is accessible only from the sea. The plantation was aban- doned and the carabao went wild and multiplied.
