Carter, 48, real estate broker and World War veteran, died yester- day at his residence, 2943 Benton street. A native of Marion, Kans., he had lived ‘here about 15 years. During the World War he served in France with the Artillery and courier service of the 5th Division. He held the rank of captain, but was pro- moted to major on his return to this country. After the war he was for a time commandant of cadets at Ken- tucky Military Institute, Louisville. He had been in the real estate business throughout his residence here. He was a member of the Masons, Almas Temple, National Sojourners, Army-Navy Country Club, Army and Navy Club and Heroes of '76. He is survived by his widow, Rus- selle C. MAYNARD DIES AT HOME HERE Author of Book on Washington Birds to Be Given Rites Tomorrow at 11 A.M. Mrs. Lucy Warner Maynard, 84, author of “Birds of Washington and Vicinity,” died yesterday at her home, 2844 Wisconsin avenue, after a three weeks’ illness. A lover of birds, Mrs. Maynard was once sent a list of all birds seen here by President Theodore Roosevelt dur- ing his stay in the White House. The list now is kept in the Roosevelt Museum in New York. Mrs. Maynard was born in Great Bend, Pa. She lived here over 50 years. Several years ago Mrs. Maynard was active in club work. She was at one time president of the Eistophos Sci- ence Club and held memberships in the Twentieth Century Club and Au- dubon Society. She is survived by a son, George M. Maynard, with whom she lived, and a sister, Miss Harriet Warner of Mont- rose, Pa. She was the widow of George C. Maynard. Howard, 84, member of a family many years identified with the newspaper and publishing field, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edna Acker, 1517 Van Buren street. She had been ill about six months. Mrs. Howard was the widow of Col. Phocion Howard, at one time con- nected with the Chicago Tribune and the old Chicago Inter-Ocean. Mr. Howard died in 1895.
