* WONAN FRENZED AS DOOM NEARS Mrs. Creighton Examined by Commission Sent by Governor. By the Associated Press. OSSINING, N. Y., July 15.—Mrs. Mary Frances Creighton, condemned to die tomorrow night for the egg- nog poison murder of Mrs. Ada Apple- gate, was examined late yesterday by ® commission appointed by Gov. Her- bert Lehman. Three of the commissioners then went back to Albany where, they said, they would give the Governor an oral report on Mrs. Creighton's sanity and health. | Her husband John and members of the family of her alleged lover, who was accused of helping her do away with Mrs. Applegate, were at the prison yesterday. In appointing the commission Gov. Herbert H. Lehman gave no indica- tion whether his action presaged a possible commutation of sentence. | The Governor presumably acted on | reports from Sing Sing Prison the past few weeks that Mrs. Creighton's losing fight for life has left her phys- ically wasted and almost speechless ‘with fear. As the hour set for her death ap- proached the 36-year-old mother of two was pictured by attendants as paralyzed from the waist down, and able to retain only liquid nourish- ment. On the other hand, her alleged companion in murder, Everett Apple- gate, was reported calmly awaiting developments. The two were convicted of adminis- tering poison to Applegate’s 220-pound wife in the Long Island bungalow which the two families shared last October. The State produced testi- mony tending to show that Applegate, a salesman. had been intimate with both Mrs. Creighton and her 16-year- old daughter Ruth. LAST RITES HELD FOR HENRY C. FERRING-ON-SEA, England, July' 15.—James Bunting, young scenario writer who says he has been to Holly- wood, declared yesterday he was *“taking opinion of counsel” on his virtual excommunication from the Church of England. The Bishop of Chichester, the Right | Rev. George Bell, denied communion to Bunting because, he said, the latter violated the Fifth Commandment: *~Honor thy father and thy mother.” Bunting's parents died recently in a gas-filled bed room. The father, the | Rev. W. H. Boyne Bunting, curate at | Comelsdale Parish, left a letter saying his son had the bulk of his fortune. Subsequently a coroner's jury criti- cized the younger Bunting for not helping his parents financially. Outlining his plans, the writer said: “I do not intend to attend church in view of the terms of the bishop’s alle- | gations, but I hope to prove him wrong in what he says about me. | “In the past it may be I was a ‘naughty boy,’ but there are lots of sons who have been naughty boys.” He conceded he had between £3,000 and £4,000 of his parents’ money. but declared he had begun to help his parents and said his father’s letter ab- solved him from blame. A shorter work week for coal miners was described yesterday by Commis- sioner Percy Tetlow of the Bituminous Coal Commission as the only remedy for unemployment resuiting from steadily increasing mechanization of mines. Tetlow, who is in charge of a miners’ rehabilitation study being conducted by the commission, said installation of cutting and loading machinery in mines was increasing at such a rate it would cause a 50 per cent displace- ment of workers within two or three years. Asserting there had been a 25 per cent displacement during the last 10 years from the same cause, Tetlow ex- pressed belief not even a return to Headquarters for LUMBER MILLWORK—ROOFING PORCH ENCLOSING FENCING—HARDWARE PAINT—CEMENT, ETC, We specialize in supplying materials for small Repair Jobs.
