Parkes Cadman, who left the coal mines of his native Shropshire to become internationally famous as “the radio preacher, brought to Brooklyn today. ‘The 71-year-old clergyman and world peace advocate died of perito- nitis yesterday at the Champlain Val- ley Hospital in Plattsburg, N. Y., just a week after he entered the institu- tion with a ruptured appendix. Bishop Francis J. McConnell of the Methodist Church will conduct the funeral Wednesday at the Brooklyn Central Congregational Church where Dr. Cadman became an outstanding religious leader. Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery in Westchester County, N. Y, (Memorial services for Dr. Cadman will be held over Radio Station WMAL tonight between 7 and 7:30 o'clock.) Frederick L. Cadman said his father died “as peacefully as a child” with members of the family at the bedside. Dr. Cadman's wife was not present. The son said she was ill at the family Summer home at Lakeville, Conn. Dr. Cadman was stricken with ap- pendicitis last Sunday night while de- livering a peace lecture at the Meth- odist Church in Plattsburg. Although guffering severe pain he finished his (&dar Hill emetery When Beauty is Permanent Time Only Adds to its Charm lecture before going to the hospital. An emergency operation disclosed the appendix had ruptured and peritonitis set in. First to Use Radio. Among the first to realize the value of the radio in church work, Rev. Dr. Cadman probably was the most widely known religlous voice In Amer- fea. He instituted at the Young Men's Christian Association in Brooklyn a Sunday afternoon service that was regularly broadcast. Through this agency he was said to have spoken to more people than ever before in history had been addressed by = preacher. An eloquent speaker, liberal-minded and tolerant and having a wide ac- quaintance with facts over the whole field of knowledge, Dr. Cadman made his radio service attractive to persons of various religious beliefs. His fame &s a pulpit orator and the quality of his sermons had spread far beyond the confines of the Central Congregational Church, Brooklyn, the pastorate of which he assumed in 1901 to continue for the remainder of his active ministry. As pastor of that church he gained rank as one of the outstanding Protestant ministers of the country. National recognition of his leader- ship came to him in 1924, when he was elected president of the Federal Coun- cil of Churches of Christ in America, the highest office among the Protestant churches of the country. He was re- elected for several years, and during his incumbency won many additional honors for the quality and quantity of his religious leadership. Dr. Cadman was one of the most prominent and active workers at the World Conference on Faith and Order held at Lausanne, Switzerland, in August, 1927. In connection with the discussion on church unity he deliv- ered what was regarded as one of the most important addresses on the sub- ject. He asked that greater recogni- tion be given by Protestants, Catho- lics and Jews of the contribution which each sect has made to the religious progress of civilization. “Reformed communions may learn that the Roman Catholic communion has stood for nobler ideals than Protestantism is wont to concede,” he saijd. “Roman Catholicism, on the other hand, might profit by recogniz- ing that Protestantism has chartered a new freedom of Christian faith and progress. “The Hebrew Scriptures enlarged the church consciousness of those early Christians who were nurtured by the noblest teachings of the Old ‘Testament.” At the conclusion of that confer- ence Dr. Cadman was chosen one of the four presidents of the World Con- ference on Life and Work held at Bern.
