PRESS ARD DD FREEDON URCE Knox Warns Against ‘Wrong Ideas’ at Dedication of Station. By the Associated Press. ROCKFORD, Ill, July 13.—Col. Prank Knox, Chicego publisher and Republican vice presidential nominee, dedicated the expanded facilities of radio station WROK last night with & plea for continued freedom of speech, press and radio and a warn- ing against using radio “to spread wrong ideas and encourage wrong pol- icies.” “Freedom of the radio and the press must be preserved,” he said. “They must not be prostituted to the uses of indecency or treason or false propaganda or class hatred or gov- ernmental coercion. Except for these limitations they must be free.” Col. Knox said he had no intention “to present a case for my party or its policies,” and did not speak as the Republican vice presidential nominee. His address was at the dedication ceremony which marked the inaugu- ration of the enlarged studios and new transmitting equipment of WROK. The Rockwood consolidated news- papers (Morning Star and Register- Republic), published by Mrs. Ruth Hanna Simms, acquired the principal interest in the station’s ownership. Broadcast Over 22 Stations. Col. Knox's speech was broadcast over WROK and 21 other stations | associated with the Affiliated Broad- | casting Co. Praising the radio as “a device for breaking down barriers of time and distance,” Col. Knox said he looked “to the day when there will be no seetional feeling in this country, when city and town will co-operate in the Eoflunon of the problems of economic “I do not expect this to come through the overzealous regimentation of an all-powerful G nment, but THENEW elleffs through the natural good sense, hard work and co-operative spirit of the American people. I will go so far now as to predict that in the future no public official will speak of the people of a typical prairie State as if they were not a part of America. As we become a more unified Nation, we will have e Government that represents no one element or interest, but the whole Nation,” the Republican vice presidential nominee declared, adding: “In the future we will have a Gov- ernment that will not legislate for one section or one group at the ex- pense of another. It must recognize the needs and the rights of every in- iterest. But it must recognize them only in relation to the rights and needs of all other interests. The es- sence of good government is not a New Deal or an old deal, but a square deal. Honesty and square play in Government are the best gu: tees of justice in €conomic relations. “Encroachments” Cited. Col. Knox, who came here from Lake Geneva, Wis., where he was a week end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Raw- leigh Warner, said that encroachments on freedom of radio, press and speech was evidenced “recently in our coun- try.” “Under the original set-up of the late lamented N. R. A. there was a possibility of restriction of freedom of the press. The whole newspaper in- dustry rose in violent protest because of its deep conviction that restraint of newspaper freedom meant the end of free institutions in America. Very recently there has been an in- vasion by Government of the privacy of correspondence and communication between private individuals. That sort of thing is strange in American life,” Col. Knox said. . Factory Output High. Output of factories owned by one co-operative organization in Sweden was valued at nearly $24,000,000 for the last year.
