WHOLESALE INDEX CONTINUES TO RISE Fertilizer Association Finds Average at 77.9, Against 77.4 Week Ago. Rising for the fourth consecutive week, the wholesale commodity price index compiled by the National Fer- tilizer Association, rose in tone week ended July 4 to the highest point registered since last February. The latest increase took the index to 77.9 per cent of the 1926-1928 average, compared with 77.4 in the preceding week, 758 & month ago and 76.1 a year ago. ! As had been the case in earlier weeks, the latest rise in the index was due largely to higher prices for farm products. In the last three weeks the index | representing the price of farm com- modities increased 6 per cent. Cotton and most grains, hay, live stock and poul increased in price last week. Although more items in- | cluded in the foods group advanced in price than declined, the effect of fall- ing prices of several of the heavily- weighted commodities resulted in a slight decline last week in the group index. Textile prices were mixed during the week, with rising quotations for rayon, cotton and certain cotton tex- tiles, offsetting the effect of lower prices for silk, wool, woolen yarns and burlap, with the result that the group | index remained unchanged. i The mark-up in finished steel prices as of the first of July, combined with a rise in the price of steel scrap, re- sulted in a moderate advance in the index of metals prices. The building-materials index rose to a new high for the recovery pe-' riod, caused by rising prices for! Southern pine, glass and roofing. A continuation of the upward trend | in the prices of crude rubber and | cattle feed was largely responsible for | the index representing miscellaneous commodities again moving upward.
