WACO, Tex., December 14.—Joe Trippett, assistant district attorney, announced tonight that self-inflicted | bullet wounds caused the death today of Thomas Willlam House, jr., 81, nephew of Col. E. M. House. Trippett said House left notes ad- dressed to his wife and children saying, “I couldn’t make the grade.” House, vice president of the Texas Long Distance Telephone Co., was found fatally wounded in the basement of his home. He had been shot four | times in the chest, one bullet making a flesh wound and the other three going through the body. A physician reached the scene before he died, but he was dead before arrival at a hospital, Pistol Found Nearby. Relatives remained silent, but from visitors who would not be quoted it | was learned that House went to the| basement, where the water heater is | ‘locabed. soon after turning on the water in the bath room. The shots were heard soon after- ward. Members of the family found House lying in the basement wounded. | A pistol was nearby. Thomes William House, sr., the father, arrived here by airplane but| like others members of the family declined comment. Police took no official notice, saymg no complaint of foul play was made. SUNDAY STAR, WASHI Italy, be in a position to oppose the powerful military machinery of Ger- many 18 months or two years hence? » kK % ‘That Italy will not submit to the League's sanctions without a desperate struggle has become evident. Never in history, say Laval and Eden, has & big power consented to capitulate when it has 1,000,000 men under arms without striking a blow. “And it is up to the British Navy, the French Army and the Franco-British air- planes,” say the French and the British, “to down Mussolini’s fighting forces, while you will look on and praise the valiant efforts of these modern gladiators.” * ok * X The Soviet government- is the only world power of the League which is leading the revolt of the “angels” This is natural. The Germans have never concealed the fact that some day Germany's expansionist move may take her troops across the borders into the Ukraine. Italian precedent in Ethiopia is not likely to help the Russian cause, But to the Soviets the French and the British say: “How can you help us in case of a war with Italy? Your general staff has already informed us that not a single airplane could be sent out of your territory because of the double menace from Japan and the Reich.” Furthermore it is known that Italy is still purchasing large quantities of raw materials from Moscow. RN ‘The Little Entente nations are equally violent in their denunciation of the Franco-British betrayal of the League. Their voices will not be loud for . and ask the representatives of the people the very simple question: “Do you waent a war?” And when both premiers begin to produce the data which the general staffs have in their secret files they will have to admit that they do not want a war. Thus this Christmas will not see another bloodshed on a large scale. Peace and good-will among people will remain the same empty words they have been in the last 20 years, but there will be no real fighting— except possibly in China. But the Chinese and the Japanese have never accepted Christ's teachings, L B Kings are becoming fashionable again. George went back to Greece; Otto is shining his gold epaulettes and hopes to return to Vienna before long. Now the Poles are thinking that a king might be a better proposi= tion than the present semi-repub- lican regime. They want to return to the old splendor of the Polish Kingdom and have selected the Duke of Kent—the son of the King of England—as the most fit candi- date for the Polish crown. This de- cision was reached at a conference of the monarchists held the other day in Warsaw and will be pre- sented to the party followers for final acceptance. The monarchists intend to demand a popular refer- endum to decide whether Poland shall continue as a republic or be- come a monarchy. It is doubtful, however, that the British government will be willing to D. C. The reported appearance of Jap- anese troops at Kalgan, in Chahar Province, increased the pessimism. JAPAN WARNS CHINA. By the Associated Press. NANKING, December 14—The Jap- anese Embassy warned the Central Chinese government again today that it must check the spread of anti-Jap- anese student agitation, arising from the North China autonomy move- ment. The embassy called the government’s attention to recent student demonstra- tions in Central China. A previous warning resulted from anti-Japanese manifestations in North China.
