A—22 DIONNES PROTEST BRIGHT LIGHTS Fear Photographic Flashes Will Affect Sight of Quintuplets. By the Associated Press. CALLANDER, Ontario, December 7. =—The Dionne quintuplets overslept today and kept a movie company wait- ing half an hour to proceed with the filming of the picture, “The Country Doctor.” After the belated start, the five little girls were photographed for seven minutes, in a sequence in which Jean Hersholt, veteran Hollywood actor, romped with the children in the hos- pital nursery. The quintuplets needed no coaxing to play. They scrambled over Her- sholt gleefully, pulling at his clothes. It is expected all the Callander scenes will be finished by Wednesday. Parents Protest Lights. ‘The parents of the quintuplets, Mr. end Mrs. Oliva Dionne, protested today against the use of photographic lights in the making of moving pictures and etill pictures of their quintuplet daughters. “There may not be any harm now,” the father said, “but it will appear later and if the babies’ eyesight should be affected that would be a terrible price to pay for the photographs that are being taken today.” 1f the parents had control of the babies—they are wards of King George under an act of the Ontario Legisla- ture—no movie company would be allowed to feature the youngsters in a film as is being done now, Dionne said. Still photographs would be taken with out the aid of flashes. “We have counted 35 flashes from the hospital in a single afternoon. ‘They are bound to be harmful to their eyes,” Dionne said. FILM EXECUTIVES GROAN. Disturbed as Emilie and Yvonne Sprout New Teeth. HOLLYWOOD, Calif., December 7 (#).—Film executives groaned today when they learned that Emilie and ‘Yvonne Dionne, of the quintuplets, have sprouted new teeth during the filming of their first feature-length picture at Callander, Ontario. “Watch the letters roll in when, or if, audiences notice it,” said studio workers. The reason for this lies in the dif- ference—before and after, so to speak—in the baby's cinematic ap- pearance. Make-up men said the arrival of a new tooth radically alters the shape of a baby's mouth, as it appears to the camera’s eye. Sometimes the child doesn't look the same at all. Furthermore, they pointed out, movie scenes are not filmed in the order of their appearance in the fin- ished picture. There have been cases when an infant appeared in the early part of the story with a tooth—but in latter scenes the tooth wasn't there! o Gifts to Be Exhibited.
