It has fixed for itself a placg | in the lives of our people which it will | continue to occupy long after our battle flags have crumbled to dust.” Likens Drive to War. Chairman McClellan declared we are engaged in another war at the present time—a war in which the agencies of the Community Chest are battling “poverty, disease. helplessness and hopelessness,” and in which there can be no armistice. Like all girls, Ellen loved pretty things, but they were scarce in her life, for Ellen was unselfish and her first thoughts were always of her grandmother, over 80, who, in her last years, was afflicted by illness. When a new dress was really need- ed or when the prospect of seeing a show with other girls seemed most alluring, Ellen sacrificed herself and devoted the money to expensive treat- | ments and medicines for her grand- mother. Still, Ellen bravely carried the bur- den, for they were proud persons and had never asked or received help. Finally, Ellen's small salary no Girl Aided in Heroic Fight to Give Grandmother Needed Treatment. THE EVE Chest Dollars in Action longer sufficed, so pocketing her pride, she went to the Central Admitting Bureau for Hospitals, for she had been told that it would help those who needed medical attention and could not ¢therwise have it. Noy the grandmother is being given the best attention and the precious medicines are furnished. Ellen is still continuing her strug- gle to provide other things for the helpless woman, encouraged by the thought that, due to the many kind- hearted persons who help others through the Community Chest, her | grandmother is being made more com- fortable in her last years. | | “Give Through the Community Chest | and Be a Good Neighbor” hovered near the plane so that people on the ground could locate the approximate spot from which the broadcast was | coming. He continued: “There has been pre- Community Chest, in a radio plea over cipitated upon Washington a crisis to which there is only one answer—a 120 per cent campaign.’ This means that in addition to raising the Chest goal of $1,877,900, an amount abso- lutely needed for the normal needs of the Chest agencies. there must be raised ap additional per cent or ap- proximately $400.000 in order to meet the relief needs which must inevitably be faced by our family service organ- ization.” In order to get the best possible reception, the short-wave receiving set was placed in the top of the ‘Washington Monument, where the sending ship could keep it in sight at all times. The message was relayed by telephone wires to the station. Station WOL. Poole declared he had been chair- man of three Liberty loan drives—a cause which he considered patriotic and holy.
