By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 23.—Though steel production gained slightly over last week, operations have been on a “plateau” since late in September and expectations of higher operating levels remain unrealized, Iron Age reported today in its weekly summary. ‘The rate of production for the cur- rent week was estimated at 52'; per | cent, compared with 52 per cent in the previous period. “Expansion of automotive demand for steel is much slower than had been looked for and added support from the construction industry ll| still prospective rather than a pres- ent reality,” the review declared. “With the industry still marking time awaiting developments scrap prices have again wavered. A num- ber of grades have declined at De- troit, and at Pittsburgh heavy melt- ing steel has receded 25 cents a ton, depressing the Iron Age scrap com- posite from $12.67 to $12.58 a ton. “Steel orders from makers of farm equipment and road machinery are beginning to show seasonal curtail- ment. On the other hand there has been a moderate seasonal improve- ment in demand from makers of toys and household appliances and from the furniture trade. “The automotive industry, on which further gains in steel output are primarily dependent, has lost none of its optimism despite the slowness with which it is moving into new model production. Assemblies for October are now estimated at 175,000 units, or about 25,000 less than earlier fore- casts, but a sharp turn is said to be assured during November.
