DAILY SHO MOUND RT STORY: TRIAL By Madeline B. Smith. 'HE westering sun beat hotly on Yank's back, as he stuffed his pitcher’s glove in the hip pocket of his base ball pants and walked slowly toward the show- ers at American League Park, his eyes intent upon the ground. “Wait a min- ute, Yank!” The catcher, Stubby Morse, ambled over, swinging his mask self-con- sciously. “I wanta talk to ya.” “I know, Stubby, you need't tell me! As a battery, you and I are half a battery, and you're it.” Yank dug his cleats into the right-field turf expressively. ‘ “Now, don't take it that way,| Yank,” Stubby pleaded. "I only | wanted to ask ya what's on your mind, what's been makin’ ya fumble signals for the last week. You'n I| been pals since we came up from | the minors to play for the Senators, ain't we? Spill it to yer buddy.” “There isn't anything to tell, Stubby, old sock! I'm merely losing the old | control, and you know what that means!” He turned his thumb down | significantly. Stubby frowned. | “Gee whiz, Yank, I bet there isn't’ another pitcher in the pro leagues what knows as much about base hall> as you do,” he broke out defensively. | | “I ain't never seen or played with a guy what knew just what to give the | batters on any team in the league.” | He eyed Yank speculatively, “It ain ‘1 no dame, now, is it?” “No,” said Yank. “That is, only| Mary McGrath. And that isn’t what's | putting me off my game, either,” he answered defensively. “Holy smokes! The biggest stock- | holder's daughter! I mighta known. | Say, just how serious is this?” WE RE going to be married if we win this game with the Macks next week,” Yank admitted. “I'm depending on my slice for the last| series game, cause I can't swing it on my salary.” He smiled wryly. “We'll have to play our pants off to win,| though.” Two days later the scrubs were out on the diamond warming up for a practice game with the regulars, who were getting in trim for the big battle with the Macks. Both Yank and Stubby sat on the bench watching the scrubs toss the ball around and practice bunting. “Stubby, I have a hunch I'm not going to play next Monday s succinctly commented : “Does being in love give a guy the crazy ideas! We couldn’t play without ya, guy!” “I'm not so sure about that.” Yank shaded his eyes against the glare of the sun and nodded his head toward the field. “Just take a look at the stuff McLarnin has on the ball!” “Horsefeathers,” Stubby grunted. “Don’t kid me, Stubby. He's bet- ter right now than I am!” Yank got up and discarded his sweatshirt be- fore going out on the mound. “Give it the old stuff, Yank,” his catcher said as he moved off. “There’s old man McGrath himsel up in the stand watching the gam Yank glanced beyond the screen and flushed. “O. K. Stubby!" But it wasn't | O. K. Yank pitched rull nine in- | “Wait a min nings and the regulars managed to beat the scrubs by a lone run. All during the game, even when he was sitting on the bench while the regulars were at bat, Yank felt the eyes of the old man boring into him. He didn't dare to look toward the stands. Funny, an old-timer like himself going hay- wire! He knew that Mary would be with her father, ‘wondering, oo, what had happen- ed to the young but experienced pitcher who was so obviously slip- ping. Yank didn't know himself what was wrong. No matter how hard he tried to get the old, familiar curves to break right, he failed. ute, Yank!" TE ok ok K A!"I"EE the game he walked swiftly toward the showers, very studi- ously avoiding the stands with his eyes. As he reached the dugout, he | felt a touch on his arm and turned | to face Mary McGrath. “Don't fret, darling,” she said. “Just an off day for you, so I wouldn't | | be worrying.” Yank grinned back at | her encouraging smile and patted her shoulder. For the next two days there were no games or heavy practice. Yank saw a great deal of Mary, but it seemed their companionship was not as close as it had been. There was that specter of defeat hanging | before both of them, but neither men- tioned it. The eventful day of the game | came then. Half an hour before | game time, Yank was in the stands talking to Mary, when the batboy came pushing through the crowd. | “Mr. McGrath wents you down in the shower room right away!” Yank ! gave a suddenly despairing look at Mary and silently followed him back to the lockers. Old man McGrath motioned him to one side, away from the players, who were donning their uniforms. “You know, I've had my eye on | you for the last month, Yank,” he said. Yank nodded, but said noth- | ing. Here it was at last. He felt a i sudden empty feeling in the pit of his stomach. “As a pitcher vou've been get- ting worse and Worse” McGrath went on. “So today I made up my mind that we have to win this final game at any cost. we can't do | mound.” “McLarnin will come through in fine shape, Mr. McGrath,” Yank said, with an attempt at heartiness. | | Off the rolls he stood no chance of | a split, certain as was their victory over the Macks. I know,” McGrath agreed. “That's why he's going in toda; ank nodded grimly and began pulling off his blouse. Suddenly nothing mattered greatly any more. “Yes, youre getting to be a lousy pitcher,” heartlessly pursued the | owner. “But—I think you'll make the best manager and coach in the league, starting in just twelve min- | utes!” He smiled at Yank as if expect- | ing some opinion, but Yank was al :udy half way through the dugout door, headed full speed for the re- served boxes.
