PITTSBURGH, September 18— Merger of two of the United States Steel Corp.’s biggest units—the Car- negie Steel Co. and the Illinois Steel Co.—was announced formally today by Chairman Myron C. Taylor of the corporation. He told a meeting of some of the Nation's leading steel men at a lunch. eon the two companies represent over 20,000,000 tons of steel ingot capacity —170 per cent of the corporation’s total ingot capacity and 28 per cent of the total ingot capacity of the country. The luncheon was in honor of B. F. Fairless, president of the new con- cern which will be known as the Car- negie-Illinois Steel Co. Fairless re- the Republic Steel Corp. President William A. Irvin of the corporation presented Fairless at the luncheon, which was attended by 300 business executives of Pittsburgh. Irvin said: “In uniting our major companies’ activities it was deemed desirable to go outside of the corporation for a man to head this new organization. With- | out reflection on any one's ability within this old organization, we de- cided to interject new blood in the new set-up by inviting one of the out-' standing young men in the industry | to join our forces.” | Chairman Taylor said many changes in production equipment are neces- sary to meet new demands for steel, and to explore new fields of possible consumption, heavy capital invest- ments are necessary.
