Unanimous support for The Star's Safety Councll campaign was voted last night at the first Fall meeting of the American University Park Citi- zens' Association, at Hurst Hall of American University. Thomas E. Lodge, chairman, Laws |and Legislation Committee, and for many years delegate to the Federation of Citizens' Associations, was author of the motion. Lodge reviewed the efforts,” in the past, of local officials and citizens to curb the District’s high traflic fatality rate. Listing the 12 promises in the “Safe Driving Pledge,” Lodge declared: “They should be called the 12 com- mandments of traffic common sense. I think The Star should be hignly commended in its efforts to keep the | District from having its seventy- fourth traffic death—the seventy-tnird | occurred today.” Fight Zone Encroachments. Unanimous action was also taken | expressing opposition to the location of any commercial zone within the area of the association and to rezone (the area, now rated first commercial, between Forty-eighth and Forty- ninth streets on Massachusetts ave- nue, to A-restricted territory. | The motion was the result of a report by Willilam T. Betts, president, that during the Summer recess of the group a movement was under wnyf to locate a gasoline station on Massa- | chusetts avenue between Forty-eighth | and Forty-ninth streets, A separate | resolution opposing the construction | of this station was also adopted. D. S. Burch declared all residents of the area are opposed to the pro- posed project and its construction would open the territory to other | undesirable commercial establish- | ments. He cited Connecticut and | Wisconsin avenues as an example of School Census Voted. i In another measure passed by the body the Education Committee was | instructed to take a census oi the community of children of school and | pre-school age as a basis of a plea | | to the school board for a school site | | in American University Park. | Expressions of appreciation to the | | Capital Transit Co. for efficient bus | | service it voluntarily gave the com- munity was expressed by several of the members Burch presented & | resolution, which was adopted, thank- | ing the utility company for this service. At the next meeting the annual | election of officers will be held. A | Nominating Committee composed oi | Burch, Jett Weyland and H. A. Donovan was appointed. William T. Betts, the president, presided at last | night's meeting.
