CLEVELAND, September 9.—Dom- inant factors in the steel market, says the weekly review of the magazine Steel, indicate the industry is enter- ing a period which is expected to develop somewhat more than a normal pick-up during the Fall months. NEW YORK, September 9.—Wonrld consumption of American cotton dur- ing the season ending July 31 totaled 11,249,000 bales, according to a re- vised estimate issued today by the New York Cotton Exchange Service. Losses during the week were registered in Eastern Penn- sylvania, where the rate was off one- half a point to 32!, per cent; New England, off 3 to 70 per cent; Buffalo was off 5 points to 32 per cent and Youngstown, 2 points to 60 per cent. Operations Unchanged. Detroit operations were unchlngedl at 94 per cent, Cleveland at 56 and Chicago at 57. Wheeling gained 6 points to 84 per cent; Pittsburgh, 1 point to 45 per cent, and Birmingham rose 5 points to 455 per cent. Steel said that pig iron production in August was up 15.7 per cent to a daily average of 56,767 tons and & monthly total of 1,759,782 tons. As September opened, 98 stacks were in blast, & gain of 6 over the beginning of August and the greatest number for 1935. Since least 3 more stacks have resumed. Great Lakes shipments of iron ore for the season to September 1 totaled 17,386,599 tons, topping the corre- sponding period of 1934 by 11 per cent. ‘The iron and steel composite of the magazine moved up 1 per cent last week to $32.79. The scrap index was up 4 cents to $12.41, while the recent | adjustment in wire nails put the finished steel composite at 40 cents to $53.70. . HOSIERY SHIPMENTS.
