RAZIL'S independence day celebration today, marking the 113th anniversary of its in- dependence from Portugal, will be observed by broadcasts over both N. B. C. and C. B. S. networks. The special observance programs will be presented over WRC at 4:30 this afternoon and WJSV tonight at 8 o'clock. As part of N. B. C.'s program, which will originate in San Francisco and Washington, Gov. Frank B. Merriam of California will extend an invitation to the President of Brazil and the mayor of Rio de Janeiro to visit the 1935 exposition. Greetings to their countrymen will be extended by high Brazilian officials here. The pro- gram also will feature patriotic music of both nations. The broadcast to be heard over WJSV at 8 will feature an address by Dr. Luis de Faro, jr., consul general of Brazil in New York City, and a guest performance with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra by Burle Mar: noted South American conductor. o THE national singles tennis matche: which have been rained out all week at Forest Hills, N. The Old Gardener Says: Amateurs often make the mis- take of planting their Spring bulbs too near the surface of the ground. Shallow planting brings the danger of having the bulbs heaved out when the ground thaws and freezes in the course of the Winter. Most daffodil bulbs should be planted 4 to 6 inches. measuring to the top. Of course more shallow planting is needed for small bulbs and they can be protected by covering the ground over them with straw or some kind of litter when cold weather comes. It is a pretty good rule to have the tops of all bulbs planted to a depth of four times the diameter of the bulbs themselves. (Copyright. 1935.) Saturday, September 7. | WRC 950k P.M. IOE PENNER will make his first radio appearance since last Spring | when he joins Al Jolson as a guest In THE EVENING Bedtime Stories Mr. Quack’s Dismay. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. There's nothing certain. it would seem, No matter how you plan and scheme. —Mrs. Quack. RS. QUACK THE MALLARD DUCK had thought herself very clever when she selected the top of an old partly rot- ted stump, well hidden in a thicket a little way back from the shore of the upper pond of Paddy the Beaver. Yes, indeed, she had thought herself very clever. “Mrs. Wood Duck may bodst all she pleases about the safety of her nest in a hollow in a tree, but if she has any safer place than I have right here I've got to be shown,” thought she. “This is perfect, It is simply perfect. All that is necessary is for me to be careful. If no one sees me going and coming, no one in the ) J;‘,,’u&’},. 4,‘(.9’!1’/1““;([&' “IT IS THE WORK OF BLACKY THE CROW,” GASPED MRS. No, sir, I cannot imagine a safer place.” Mrs. Quack didn't share her secret and Mrs. Forbes in private life—will play the lead roles in A. A. She knew that he would keep away from there. She | knew that” once the eggs were laid Mr. Quack would have very little in- terest in the nest. He would be more concerned with his own affairs. You see, he is naturally selfish and more than willing to leave all family cares and responsibilities to Mrs. Quack. Now, of course, Mrs. Quack had to leave that nest and her precious eggs every day in order to get food. My, my, how careful she was when she left it and when she returned to it! Never once did she forget to watch sharply for the presence of any neighbors who might have a liking for eggs. She took every care that long experience had taught her how to take. There were eight big greenish-white eggs in that nest, and how proud she was of them. How carefully she cov- ered them with the down blanket when she left them to get her food. very proud of those eggs, was Mrs. | Quack. Then one day when she returned | she had one of the, worst shocks of her whole life. Yes, sir, she did so. She had not suspected that anything was wrong. She had become so used to going and coming unseen that she had grown to feel that her secret was absolutely safe. So unsuspectingly she hopped up to the edge of that old stump and looked in. Alas! That soft, warm blanket made from the down taken from her own breast was torn and scattered. Three eggs were missing. A hasty look around dis- covered the shells of two of them on the ground Mrs. Quack knew instant- ly who had taken those eggs. “It is the work of Blacky the Crow,” gasped Mrs. Quack. “There is no doubt about it, and this means that he will sooner or later get the other eggs. I can't stay on the nest all the time, and he will be watching to see when I leave. Oh, dear! Oh, dear! What shall I do?” There on the edge of the old stump Mrs. Quack stood, the very picture of dismay. It would have been bad | enough under any circumstances, but |to have this happen when she had | been so sure that the nest was a com- plete secret made it seem worse than it would have seemed otherwise, Far over in the Green Forest she | heard a sound that made her shake with rage. “Caw, caw, caw!” came the voice of Blacky the Crow, and she was sure that there was a note of triumph in that voice. “The black robber!” exclaimed Mrs. Quack. “He thinks he’s smart because he found my nest and stole my eggs. He knows well enough that I'll leave this nest now. It is useless to stay. He'll simply keep coming until he has | taken all the eggs. The Romance of Your Name. BY RUBY HASKINS ELLIS, THE surname Lawson originated with the personal name, Law- rence. Law was at one time a familiar abbreviation for Lawrence, and Law’s son—Lawson—developed as a family name, The armorial bearings given here were borne to America by the Vir- ginia line of Lawsons, the first rep- | resentative being Rowland Lawson. His will was probated in Lancaster | County, Va., in 1661, naming his chil- dren Rowland, Elizabeth, John, Henry |and Letitia. The coat of arms here | displayed was found affixed to the will of Rowland Lawson, jr, which was probated in 1706. The arms are similar to those of the Lawson family of Brough Hall. Yorkshire, England, and signify close relationship of the families. . Rowiand Lawson, jr, had sons, Descendants of found in Vir- ginia and other Southern States. In the New England States there were several first settlers—Christopher, a cooper, who settled in Exeter, Mass., the Rev. Deodate Lawson, of Denton, County land, who took the oath of a freeman in Boston in 1680, and preached in Salem, now Danvers, Mass,, in 1683.
