ALLENTOWN, Pa., September 3.— Felice Lyne, former Kansas City schoolgirl singer, who achieved her greatest success in opera in London and Paris, died Sunday at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Sand- ford T. Lyne. Born in Slater, Mo., Miss Lyne re- ceived her early education in the schools of Kansas City. Her color- ature soprano voice won her distine- tion as a schoolgirl singer and she went to Paris to study under Mar- chesa.. While there she was heard by Oscar Hammerstein, who was about to open an opera house in London, and he signed her. By the Associated Press, NEW YORK, September 3.—Merle Devore Johnson, 60, author, illus- trator and authority on Mark Twain, who died of pneumonia, was buried here yesterday. Born at Oregon City, Oreg., John- son attended Leland Stanford Uni- versity and later married Margaret Keough of S8an Francisco, There are two children, Helen Carey and Marion Josephine.
