CHUNGKING, Szechuan Province, China (#)—Mining engineers and geologists are following close on the heels of advancing government armies in this West China province, where retreating Communist forces are aban- doning territories reputed to be im. mensely rich in oll, coal and gold. Plans for an intensive program of exploitation of these untouched nat- ural resources have been announced by the National Economie Council of the Chinese government. Experts of the council plan a thorough survey of "|all mineral-bearing and oil-bearing Coal flelds in Northern Szechuan which have been under Communist a | occupation for severa] years were once de:hredbyl!fifllhmlaflltmeon- tain enough coal to supply the needs of the entire world for several cen- turies, Petroleum Abundant. Near the salt beds at Tseliutsing s petroleum oozes from the earth and forms pools on the surface of the land. Chinese experts believe the bed: underlain with vast reservoirs of oil. Meanwhile, Gen. Chiang Kai-Shek, directing his armies from headquar- ters in this Yangtze port, pushes broad highways into these unexploited regions and builds blockhouses which he hopes will enable his soldiers to hold the territory they have re- covered. Other roads are being built into the neighboring provinces of Kwei- chow, Yunnan, Shensi and Kansu, also rich in unexploited natural re- sources. By constructing these lines of communication, which all con- verge on Chungking, China's mili- tary chief is strengthening his au- thority over a territory 500,000 square miles in area. Until Gen. Chiang asserted his power in these provinces, the mileage of roads was negligible. ‘The generalissimo is showing provin- cial militarists that highways can more than repay their builders by inbroken car on track = Nearby sections. bushel ha; flat “type. 40450, CUCUMBERS —New " Jersey. * bushel K DRI s o 13 oot s bum‘h NTS—New Jersey, lushel o et v Peniisylvans. sacks. 7581.00: poorer lower CAl 8 —One Californis arrived: one Chlifornia, West- 5a; 5 Peonssls orida, No on A 3.00a3.50. cario} Aarr "ol bl’ol:g ‘cl track. crates, 1.40a1.78. ‘JM!LHOHQI. wventilated crates, Pers sians. 4.0085.00, L. Chiang owes his expanding power in West China. When the Com- munists streamed out of Central China and into the west they threw such & scare into the provincial satraps that the latter sent urgent calls for assistance to Gen Chiang, to whom they had pccorded only lip service before. The nation's military leader seized upon this opportunity to extend his authority. He poured thousands of his best troops into the western provinces. They are still there, Enforcement of Revenues. ‘While the generalissimo entrenches himself here, he is compelling petty militarists who have been fattening themselves on illegal taxes and opjum revenues to bear the brunt of the at- tack against the reds, When they provg unequal to the task, they are replaced by men from Gen. Chiang's own staff. ‘The Communists, penned up for the last two years in a large area of Nerth- eastern Szechuan, are pushing west- ward into the mountain wilderness which separates Szechuan from Tibet, where they are expected to make a | .stand. Another large body of reds is concentrating in Southeastedn Sze- chuan along the Yunnan and Kwei- chow boundaries. Here they will find thin “piekings,* for the region is mountainous and unproductive and has few large towns.
