NEW YORK, August 31.—United Btates Government issues slid off slightly in the bond market today while corporate obligations were mixed with gains and losses about evenly divided. Foreign loans were steady. In the Federal list, losses up to 4-32nds prevailed with the exception of Treasury 3s and Home Owners’ Loan 2%s, which were both a little higher. A number of rail bonds moved up fractionally, including St. Paul 5s, Great Northern 4':s, Missouri Pa- cific S5s, Northern Pacific 55 and Southern Railway 4s. Fractional losses were suffered by the following: Bati- more & Ohio 412s and Erie 5s. Among the industrials, Armour & Co. 4135, Phillips Petroleum 5%s, and Texas Corp. 5s gave a little ground. International Telephone 5s braced up a full point. American & Foreign Power 5s and Postal Telegraph 5s were off fractions. German 5!2s were down & little. Ttalian 7s were steady. CHICAGO, August 31 (®) —Scat- tered buying gave the wheat market | a firm tone early today. Trading was largely in the nature of evening up | accounts, however, accompaiied by talk that six days of sagging prices had put the market in a strong tech- mical position. Opening !4 k. lower to 32 higher, December, 8873a89, wheat later held | near the previous close. Corn started 3, off to 3 up, December 57a57%, and then showed little change. Some strength in wheat was asso- ciated with an early rise in stocks. Prices rallied more than a cent a bushel after the release of one pri- vate crop statement indicating a re- duction in the domestic Spring wheat estimate of 30,000,000 bushels during the last month. This report placed the crop at 152,000,000 bushels, com- pared with the last Government fig- ures of 176,000,000 and last year's production of 91,400,000. The report also said it considered the latest Gov- ernment figure for Winter wheat pro- duction was too high. Some traders, however, were in- clined to await other private crop re- ports to be released early next week. | Announcement of the Canadian ‘Wheat Board's minimum price for cash wheat also was awaited. The crop report issued today esti- mated corfl production at 2,144,000,000 bushels, compared with the Govern- ment August 1 figure of 2,272,000,000. New crop corn deliveries rose almost a cent, while the September contract displayed less strength because of scat- tered liquidation. Oats showed little change, while provisions were higher. ember — OBob. 8L A g0 RYE— Beptember .. Recemver 2 RLEY— 1362 1386 Chicago Cash Market. Cash wheat—No. 2 hard, 1.06; No. 2 mixed, 86. NEW YORK, August 31.—*“For the frst time in three years business en- ters the Fall season with something akin to the sense of freedom that held sway in the ‘good old days'—utility and soft coal industries excepted.” Business Week reports in its issue today. “Steelmakers’,” it adds, “failure to | post fourth-quarter prices, as for- merly required under the code is symptomatic. Again, cotton markets have been freed of some of last year's artificiality by the new 10-cent loan provision replacing the 12-cent guar- antee of 1934. In some industries the ‘new-lease-on-life’ attitude 1is ex- | plained by the failure of such regu- latory measures as the Walsh, food and drug, and oil control bills to make the legislative grade.” “Business Week's inglex of general business activity continues to climb into new high territory for 1935, in- creasing its magin over the past three years. Steel and motor production slackened pace as Labor day ap- proached, but such temporary reces- slons were expected and do not mar the present outlook. Construction | volume in early August again jumped to high levels for 1935, with daily average awards running close to $7.000,000. “Carloadings crossed the 1934 level | for the first time since early June as agricultural products began to mpve in greater volume.
