NEW YORK. August 26.—Lacking sufficient support to continue Satur- day’s recovery, the United States Gov- ernment section of the bond market worked to lower levels today. Although volume was below that of Friday's downward movement, the losses were almost as large, several | of the Treasuries closing around half | a point down. Some of the guaran- teed issues showed similar heaviness. Weakness in utility bonds was a pull against improvement in the cor- porate division, although there were a fair number of gains in the indus- | trial groups. Rails were narrow. DIVIDEND IS ORDERED ON R. C. A. PREFERRED | Bpecial Dispatch to The NEW YORK., August 16.—The reg- | alar quarterly dividend on the “A” preferred stock of the Radio Corpo- ration of America for the third quar- ter of 1935 has been declared by the | directors. The dividend is 1% per cent for the quarter, amounting to 87': cents a share, to holders of record at the close of | business on the fourth day of Sep- tember, 1935, It applies to all outstanding shares of “A" preferred stock, including shares of “A" preferred represented by outstanding unexchanged certificates of original preferred stock—10 of suci ‘unexchanged shares being equal to one | share of “A" preferred. ASSOCIATED OUTPUT SCORES BIG ADVANCE Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 26.—For the week ended August 17, the net electric output of the Associated Gas & Elec- | tric System amounted to 57,553,919 units (k.-w. h.), which is an increase ©of 8.3 per cent over the same week a year ago. This is the largest percentage in. ereass since April, 1934, a period of more than 15 months. Of the 24 operating properties, 22 reported in- creases over last year's figures. It is noteworthy that these in-| ereases were explained not only by in- | dustrial activity but by greater resi- ' dentfal and commercial use as well. INSURANCE STOCKS NEW YORK. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 26.—The great- | est machine shop in the world—the 1935 machine tool show—will open in the Cleveland Municipal Auditorium on September 11. It will be the largest | industrial exposition ever held in the United States. More than five acres of exhibit space will be required to display the modern machine tools and accessories. And it is estimated that 5,000 kilo- 8e watts of electrical energy—enough to supply a city the size of Butler, Pa., or Zanesville, Ohio, or Fort Smith, Ark—will be required tc pull the hourly load, running. More important than size is the fact that this year's show will be the first since the beginning of the depression in 1929. From that you might think the industry is backward and has no fight in it. But a little consideration of the problem suggests that when the depression hits the tool - industry it | “stays hit.” The industry usually stays down until industry is ready to turn upward again. 71 hard times the potential business simply is not there, and it wuold be fatuous to try to drum it up. Experience has shown that products and machine needs change before business revives sufficiently from de- pression to create a broad new ma- chine tool demand. The fact that it was decided sev- | eral weeks ago to hold a show this year is, therefore, conclusive evidence that its sponsor—the National Ma- chine Tool Builders’ Association—be- lieves the turn has come in heavy in- | dustry. There is no doubt that it has come in machine tools, for the July index of orders stood at 119.8 per cent (1922-24 equals 100 per cent), the | highest since 1929. The increase was | 28.7 per cent over June, which, in - 24 per cent over May. In- | credible as it may seem, the depres- | sion low for this index was 15, (Copyright. 1935.) NEW YORK, August 26.—The American Iron and Steel Institute estimated today that operations in the steel industry this week would de- cline 0.9 of 1 point to 47.9 per cent of capacity. | Last week operations were placed at 48.8 per cent. A month ago the rate was 44 per cent and a year ago 19.1 per cent. This marks the first break in the rising production trend since the firsy week in July, when the industry oper- ated at an average of 32.8 per cent of capacity. Since that time the industry recorded seven consecutive weekly gains. Week-end steel trade reviews spoke of increased demands for steel prod- | ucts, which led to the opinion in trade | quarters that the present setback was temporary.
