Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 26.—Surpass- | ing the estimates made at the begin- ning of the year, the furniture in- dustry appears to be well on the way to achieve the best position it has occupied in a decade, according to a survey by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. “Running contrary to most divisions the furniture industry did not wait until 1929 to record a recession, as its downtrend already was under way by that time, having started.in 1926. The decline was checked abruptly, however, during the last half of 1933 and the gains were extended with em- phasis during 1934, as a new era of furniture appreciation came into evi- dence. “During the current year the trend in nearly all divisions has been prac- | tically uninterruptedly upward. Pro- duction in some centers has run 60 to 100 per cent ahead of the 1934 totals, while for retailers and whole- salers the gains have ranged from 10 to 50 per cent At the Grand Rapids market in July, orders were 84 per cent ahead of those booked during the 1934 event, enabling manufactur- ers to keep their plants going until the close of the Fall season. Low in- ventories have forced retailers to buy ahead, because of delivery delays and price advances. Buyers Get More. “Buyers of furniture now are re- ceiving more value for every dollar spent than at any time in the trade’s history, in view of the current low price level and the superior workman- ship and quality which manufactuers are including in their products this year. The steady rise in residential building, the rapid disappearance of the “doubling-up” of families and the increase in marriages are expected to bring a constantly-widening distribu- tion. “For every month this year manu- facturers of furniture have operated on schedules larger than those for the similar months of both 1934 and 1933. Although output has fluctuated for the various centers, with some report- ing a gain of 40 to 100 per cent n dollar volume and 30 to 60 per cent in uns, production for the seven months | Fri: has averaged 20 to 35 per cent above the 1934 figures. Many have suffialent business booked Range | manufacturers | Lac! maintain current operations through October. Plants Kept Busy. “Manufacturers of suites have made | 50 to 60 per cent more merchandise have been working full time, and with orders still coming in are expecting to hold to capacity schedules until the early part of November. In the desk and office furniture division the in- crease in output over 1934 ranges from | 25 to 35 per cent. Fair progress was | reported by manufacturers of hospital | and metal beds for apartment houses and hotels. | “In spite of the light demand which ', persisted during April and May, the good showing for the first quarter and the widening expansion of distribution since mid-June lifted volume of retail sales for the seven months of the cur- rent year 15 to 25 per cent above that | for the corresponding 1934 period. motional events, reported as the best in six years in some districts, may per cent more than in 1934, which many retailers have estimated.” CHECKS ON INDIVIDUAL BANK ACCOUNTS SOAR By the Associatec Press.
