A—]_fi k¥ UP AFTER SLUMP Utilities Reduce or Cancel Losses—Others Also Recover Slightly. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 20.—A feeble rally in utilities which brought lqaders back to unchanged or slightly net higher positions, was the principal trading feature in late Curb market dealings today. Other sections of the list likewise tame up slightly from the lows of the day, but the main bedy of stocks were still below Monday's finals. Trading was active. BONDS ON THE CURB MARKET. FORU. 3. RECOVERY Raising of New Capital or| - Industrial Expansio Made Possible. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 20.—It fis profits that make prosperity, not | prosperity that makes profits. As a matter of fact prosperity often results in severe losses for those who over- reach, Right now profits are proving te be | | promising stepping stones to the no!ld; ground of healthy and expanding in- | | dustrial activity. Only as a business | 1 | profits is it able to raise new capital | on advantageous terms and enter a cycle of growth which is beneficial directly to labor and investors and management, and which indirectly | contributes to the well-being of cther | | enterprises which supply it with ma- | chines and materials and services Because the motor industry is mak- ing profits, General Motors is plan- ning to expend $50,000,000 in ex- pansion and improvements to plants | and up-to-the-minute machining. | The steel industry feels the first stir- ring of sustained recovery n a| miscellaneous demand which keeps | operations at a level double that of a year ago, although buying by the rail- |road and the building industry still| lags. Profits, it is believed, are in sight for even the big, thoroughly integrated and highly diversified com- panies, so they are buying mass pro- duction machinery, which is the last word in efficiency. Volume Counts in Steel. | Volume is in the making. and that is what counts in steel, which is a | mass-production industry. | Railroads may also be said to have | & high “break-even point,” for it is difficult to bring expenses down be- yond a certain minimum. But when traffic rises bevond the point which | pays expenses it is possible to carry | | over a large proportion of the added | gross revenues to net. A great many | | trunk lines could handle 25 per cent more freight than they are now carry- | to 8. on | United States shipments. FINANCIAL. In Sears, Roebuck Sales for Month By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 20.—Sears, Roe- buck & Co. today announced sales of $24,587,644 for the period of July 17 to August 13, an increase of $,303,528 over the $20,284,116 total a year ago. The company also reported total sales of $202,709,948 from January 30 to August 13, an increase of $41,786,- 332 over last year. CHICAGO PRODUCE. And once the rails get out of the red in a sizable way, they may be counted upon to become rather gen- erous buyers cof equipment, contrib- uting to the recovery in steel and bringing the railway equipment in- dustry back to life after 10 years in the ice box. Retail Outlook Good. The profit ocutlook for retailers is considered good for the Fall months, because higher retail prices in con- sonance with advances in wholesale | prices are expected to meet little buy- ing resistance and should result in a higher dollar value per sale. The 14 per cent gain by department stores in July reflected an increasing turnover of merchandise units, for the Fair- child retail price index stood at 852 at the beginaing of August, a decline of 0.6 under the previous month and 3.1 below that of the corresponding month a year ago. A 15 per cent sales increase is 2xpected in the Fall and a satisfactory proportion of that will go to net, because major elements of costs will not be increased (Copyright. 1975) fair quality, | WHOLESALE INDEX " CONTINGES TORKE |Fertilizer Association Finds | Average at Highest Point ; of Recovery. There was a continued, though slight, rise in the general level of wholesale commodity prices in the week ended August 17, following ad- vances in the three preceding weeks. | The index of the National Fertilizer Assoclation rose to 78.9 per cent of the 1926-1928 average, the highest point so far reached during the re- CCNEI’Y period. A week ago the index was'78.8, a month ago, 77.3, and a year ago, 74.2, | As had been the case in recent | weeks the rise in the index last week | was due largely to higher prices for farm products. The most significant advance occurred in the grains, feeds and live stock group index, which rose to 89.8 from 89.0 in the week pre- | ceding. This advance was due almost en- tirely to a continued rise in live stock quotations, as grain and feedstuff prices were generally lower. The tex- tiles index was higher during the week due mainly to advancing cotton prices and a continuation of the sharp | rise in the price of silk. | Fats and oils prices moved upward during the week, with seven items in the group advancing and only one de- clining, and with the sharpest advance being shown by lard. There was a moderate decline in the foods index last week following the rather sharp advance which had taken place during the preceding month. A slight decline occurred in the metals index, a further rise in scrap steel prices being more than offset by lower quotations for tin and silver. Prices of 32 commodities included in the index advanced in price during the week, while 28 declined; in the preced- ing week there were 26 advances and 22 declines; in the second preceding week there were 42 advances and 18 declines. | ANNOUNCING A GREAT MONEY SAVING OFFER AT 'STAR RADIO CO.
