NEW YORK, August 20.—The Board of Managers of the New York Coffee and Sugar Exchange today suspended trading in the September No. 1 sugar contract and ordered that contract be liquidated at 2.58 cents a pound, last | night's closing price. | By this action the exchange avoided | & “squeeze” in the contracts which had been threatened owing to the fact | that the Cuban 1935 quota sugar is almost entirely exhausted. The trouble arose from the fact that under the rules of the exchange ‘delivenble No. 1 grades can inciude only Cuban sugar in bond or duty- paid sugar still within the Cuban sugar quota at the time of delivery. In other words, with the Cuban | quota virtually fulfilled, members were fast reaching a point at which they would have been unable to meet | their contracts. The action of the board of man- | agers of the exchange was not unex- pected in sugar circles inasmuch as it followed circulation of an exchange ship. Along Front street, the sugar dis- trict of Wall Street, it was understood in well-informed circles that the ob- ject of the questionnaire was to de- termine the long and short positions of clients of members of the exchange.
