U.5. COAST GUARD MARKS FOUNDING Celebrates 145th Anniver- sary Today With Fitting Ceremonies at Bases. By the Assoclated Press. ‘The Coast Guard, a brin child of Alexander Hamilton, celebrates its 145th anniversary today. On August 4, 1790, President George ‘Washington signed an act creating the “revenue cutter service,” an obscure force of 10 cutters manned by ap- proximately 200 men. Out of that grew the present Coast Guard of 55 cruising cutters and patrol boats, as well as several hun- dred small craft, 243 life-saving sta- tions, 5 air stations and 40 planes. The personnel includes 500 commis- sioned officers, 600 wairant officers and 9,000 enlisted men. Originally formed io serve as the Nation's first armed force afloat to protect the customs revenue and to ) ‘ve order along the coast line, the Coast Guard has since seen its duties expand greatly. Now it is charged with prevention of smuggling, enforcement of customs | and navigation laws; of regulations on oil pollution, immigration. quarantine and neutrality. It must guard safety of life during regattas or marine parades, protect fisheries in Alaska and guard the seal herds and sea otter in the North Pacific and Bering Sea. Its humanitarian dutles include ren- dering assistance to mariners and dis- tressed vessels, flood relief in Western rivers, destruction and removal of derelicts and wrecks. Its most dramatic work is life sav- ing and the rescue of the shipwrecked. Its records show about 6,000 persons rescued during each of the last two years. Major celebrations will be held at New London, home of the Coast Guard Academy, and at cther impor- tant bases. —— Lion Claimed From Railroad. AUGUSTA, Ga. (P)—After a week's delay, Robert L. Those are the “guests” that “Jim” Farley has beneath his roof. But Mme. Perkins has preserved the Labor Department inviolate—and it is the only new building in the Triangle that is so preserved.
