A—12 ARLNER WREGED IFORGEDDESIEN Fflots Suffer Scratches, but| ¥ ‘Passengers Escape L Injury. BY the Associated Press FALBUQUERQUE, N. Mex., Ausust| SE-A crack transcontinental airliner was wrecked today in an emergency 1ahding in a scrub tree forest 20 miles | e#st of here, but the nine passengers eseaped unhurt and the two pilots received only cuts and bruises | Shortly after the eastbound "Skv| chlef” of Transcontinental & West- ern Air, Inc, let Albuquerque he gas line apparently became Waler- clogged and Pilot Clifford V. Abbott quickly brought it to ewrth. Startled from drowsiness, the pas-| sengers climbed from the wreckage to.a taxi summoned by radio and re- | sumed their trip in another plane One of the passengers, Gus Hall- | quist of Kansas City, said “nothing happened” beyond “a rather severe; bump when we struck the ground and | my legs struck the seat in front.” | The left wing was torn from the Craft by the trees it struck, two mo- tors were dislodged and the propellers ‘were broken. Steve Hannagan, New York adver- tising man, a passenger, said the ship was flyir 3 at 9,500 feet when the mo- tors suddenly went dead. “I knew something was wrong and braced myself for it.” he said. “I be- lieve the pilot hit a tree intentionally when he put the ship down with land- ing gear retracted.” MILLIKAN WILL SEND BALLOONS UP 20 MILES Physicist, Arriving in San An- tonio, Hopes Devices They Carry Will Shed Light on Cosmic Ray. By the Associated Press. SAN ANTONIO, Tex. August 3.— Dr. Robert A. Millikan came here to- day in quest of a solution for mys- teries of the upper stratosphere never| penetrated by man. The interna- tionally recognized physicist brought super-sensitive recording devices for studies of the cosmic ray. The instruments will be attached to 10-foot balloons, which Dr. Milli- kan hopes will ascend to an altitude of more than 20 miles before they burst to shower the recording devices. attached to parachutes, back to earth The high altitude is desired in order to obtain latitude distribution. He recalled a similar experiment con- ducted at Kelly Field in 1922, when an altitude of 10 miles was attained, but the instruments used at that time were crude, he said. DOLE PROBLEM FACING HOPKINS Shifting of Unemployables to States Worries Re- | lief Directors. By the Associated Press. Work-relief directors last night | looked forward to the return of Harry | L. Hopkins tomorrow for a renewed sttack on one of the $4,000,000,000 | program’s most troublesome prob- | lems—getting States and communities | to provide for their unemployables. 1f Hopkins' announced intention to disband the Relief Administration on | November 1 is not carried out, it was said. it will be because of these 4,- 3 | | | than a result of difficulties in attain- ing the 3,500,000-job goal for the work | relief program. THE SU NDAY STAR, 'WASHINGTON, D. C, \_——-——_——-__——__—___— New Ho:spit_al ‘Unit for Contagious Cases Opens September 1 AUGUST 4, 1935—PART ONE. "~ GALLINGER NI T0 OPENSEPY. $455,000 Ward for Conta- gious Diseases Turned Over to Dr. Bocock. ‘The District's new $455,000 ward for contagious disease cases, said to be unique in hospital construction and design, will open its doors Septem- ber 1. During the past week it was turned over by the Commissioners to Dr. Edgar A. Boctock, superintendent of Gallinger Municipal Hospital, who wil! supervise the installation of equip- ment before the formal opening. The new hospital building, pronounced one of the best of its kind in the coun- try, s directly north of the main Gal- linger Building and connects with it by a covered corridor. L4 This is the first building erected in ‘Washington where the entire floor structure is of steel instead of the usual concrete and steel construction. A cellular steel floor construction has been utilized, which fot only serves as a structural factor, but also acts as an underfloor duct system, making it possible to install new electric plugs, telephones, radios, etc., at any point without the necessity of exposed wires or conduits. ‘Water Lines of Copper. Another novelty is the use of stream- lined copper tubing for water lines, which eliminates treading and fitting of pipes and produced a superior job. Utmost precaution w=s taken in the designing of the disease to elim- inate the possibility of contacts with carriers of contagious disease. The entire building is designed so the in- fected patient shall not touch an electric swigch or any other piece of hardware which might get in con- tact with a carrier. Each bed rooml is isolated and is provided with pri-| vate toilets and showers. | The District has been caring for | contaglous disease cases under con- | tract with Qarfield Hospital. Its new | ward will have a capacity of 150 beds, but is so designed that by utilizing the | porches the capacity can be increased | to 204 beds. | The building is -two stories high,' with basement and a penthouse and is so constructed that a new story may | be added to it. It has five wings | which provide a maximum of air and | sunlight for every corridor and room in the structure, which is shaped in the form of a double Y. | Stations for Nurses. | In the center are the stations of the | supervisor of nurses and the nurses’ | stations are located at both ends of | the main wings. Moving toward the actual start of the long-delayed work program, Hop- kins last week allotted direct relief money to 13 States for only the first half of August. Officials said at least 2,900,000 already had jobs—the 2,- 500,000 employed by the Relief Ad- ministration and 400,000 members of the Civilian Conservation Corps— leaving only 600,000 more to be given employment. The land improvement phase of the program, meanwhile, moved forward on two fronts, the President allotting $12,000,000 to the Forest Service to | withdraw unproductive land from cultivation, while Rexford G. Tugwell, | resettlement administrator, decided to look out for farmers in danger of | going on relief as well as those al- | ready on the dole. Still on the President’s desk was | a $22000,000 recommendation from the Work-Relief Allotment Committee for other land purchases by the Re- | settlement Administration. Acreage | acquired by the two agencies will be converted into recreational areas and game sanctuaries by C. C. C. and relief workmen. | ANNIVERSARY OF FIRST CONGRESS TO BE MARKED Postponed Ceremonies Will Held Tomorrow Evening at Home of Mrs. Custis Perry. They turn and twist, although they are double hung and any sash can be cleaned from the inside sitting in an easy chair. The entie bullding has been screened with copper screens on metal frames. There are also two inciner- ators and two laundry chutes. The corridors are lined with tile, the flooring with rubber tile. The utity rooms also are tiled and the patients’ rooms have floors of terrazzo. The huilding represents a 10 per cent savings in actual cost as a re- sult, it was said, in cheaper labor and materials since the original estimates. It was turned over to the District on July 16 by the bullder, the D. M. W. Engineering Corp. e WHEAT CRISIS RENEWED Low Price in France Continues Flandin Plan.
