NEW HAIR DEVICE WILL AID G-MEN Fiber - Testing Mechanism, Unique but Simple, to Help Fight Crime. A strange but simple device reveal- ing the innermost secrets of wool, furs, hair and fibers, given to the world of science by the seniar fiber technogolist of the Department of Ag- riculture, was greeted yesterday by the G men of J. Edgar Hoover as & nossible boon to their work of crime detection. The invention of Dr. J. I. Hardy ‘oes away with former involved, la- orious laboratory work necessary to he cross-sectioning and clear study °f the structure of natural and arti- cial fibers and performs the work ‘eanly and quickly. Mr. Hoover remarked: “This simple and rapid method is ie sort of technique well adapted to e needs of investigators seeking to 've crime where time, detail and curacy are of the utmost impor- 1ce.” Chance Clews Can Be Found. It is believed the instrument will able the close and quick examina- n of fibers on & tuft of clothing ich as & burglar might leave behind n a nail or splinter as he slinks way from his nefarious work. Crime ‘etection experts, by comparing the ross-sectionial appearance of the ibers with that of a sample from the uspect’s clothing, might find evidence o link him to the crime, it is thought. But the use of Dr. Hardy's inven- ion does not stop there. It can also ’e employed in detecting questionable r fraudulent practices or misrepre- ‘entation of quality of cloth, in pro- noting live stock breeding and in ob- sining information of the various ypes of hair and fibers in different urs, fabrics and Industrial products. Photographs of the fibers reveal trange microscopic picture studies, wcording to the inventor, who says: “Cross sections of rayon fibers ap- year as a varied assortment of ob- ects suggesting strange animal crack- Ts “The cross sections of cotton fibers ‘esemble closely the flat appearance of + split kidney bean. “Very curly bair from a human head | 'nds to be oval in cross section, hereas the tendency of straight hu- an hair is to be circular. One Fiber Very Beautiful. “One of the most beautiful fiber ‘oss sections is offered by the fur.of ne vicuna, an animal much like the ama and alpaca, which inhabits the | .ndes Mountains in Ecuador and “olivia. “The inner structure of the coarse | hair, as magnified, frequently resem- | bles four-leaf clovers with fine lattice | vork. | “Exceedingly fine hair comes from | the coat of the land otter, found in Eu- Irpe, Asia and America. “The largest hair—as large in diam- ster a8 & toothpick—grows on the tail | { the African elephant. It closely re- “mbles a bristle, but has no commer- ial value—not even as a toothpick. “Deer hairs must be handled care- filly by fiber examiners because they & are hollow and crush easily.” | With his device Dr. Hardy can pre- rare very thin cross sections for ex- umination within 10 minutes, whereas | n the past, when fibers had to be held | by paraffin molds, it required several | hours to obtain the cross sections. The | instrument also makes it possible to cut | the fibers to one ten-thousandth of an | inch without injury to the delicate in- | ernal structure, according to Dr.| “ardy. l Watch Ticks in Mine Trip. Dropped by a hewer in the Victory itt, Consett, Scotland, a watch has «een found in a ton of coal at Con- | ett Iron Co.’s Templetown Brickworks. | To get there it must have been run | Jong a conveyer, thrown into a tub, aken up the shaft, carried along the creens and dropped into a pithead | wruck. Thence it traveled to Temple- own, was tipped down the depot| sunkers, into a truck, on to the kilns nd dumped on the ground. After ail ‘his it still ticked, only the glass being wroken.
