WORKKEEPSYOUTH OF QUEEN NARE Near 60, She Is Lighter and More Graceful Than on U. S. Visit. BALCHIK, Rumania () —Within & few months Queen Marie of Ru- mania will be 60 years old. But Ru- mania’s war-time Queen, who has been described as the most beautiful and most versatile woman sovereign in the world, looks far younger than her threescore years. She says the secret of her youth, buoyancy and good health is hard work, strict self-discipline, moderation in eating, drinking and smoking, eight hours’ sleep every night, daily horse- back riding in the country, motor boating, and & cheerful, philosophic frame of mind. She declares that, barring serious disease, she excts to live to be 100. Granddaughter of the late Queen Victoria of England, she is consider- ably lighter in weight today, and her figure more graceful, than when she visited the United States eight years ago. There is not a trace of gray in her hair, which retains its old-time rich blond hue. Advocates Riding for Youth. A great lover of horses, dogs and sports, the Queen gallops over the countryside every day for two hours on her favorite chestnut-brown steed, with her black spaniels chasing breathlessly after her. She says there is nothing like horseback riding to keep a woman young, supple and in good health. Every morning the Queen takes a fast trip on the Black Sea in her American speedboat, which she pilots Queen at Home MARIE LIVES QUIETLY IN QUAINT VILLA. Copyright, A. P. Wirephoto. Of Rumania in a garden at her “With my 60 years,” said the Queen reflectively, “I have discovered that the only real joy in life is hard work and in making others happy. But it is not always easy to make others happy. Optimism Survives. . “My most acute sorrow in life has been to see how often one’s best inten- tions are misunderstood, and how little good one can really do even if one concentrates one's life on it. But in spite of all my sorrows and trials, I have not lost my optimism, my cheer- fulness, or my faith in others. God gave me a heart strong enough to bear sorrow, a spirit deep enough to tolerate all unkindness, and a nature generous enough to accept disappointment and even defeat.” | The Queen was obviously referring| to King Carol's treatment of her when she spoke, for her voice was, tinged with emotion. But she showed no trace of resentment or rancor. In her study she showed all her‘l old-time energy, vivacity and enthu-! siasm. The Queen’s once youthful| bloom has now faded into the mellow | beauty of mature age. But her dezp‘ blue eyes still flash with their former brilliancy, her finely molded fea-| tures are illumined with an engag- | ing smile, and her mind works with the rapidity of a machine gun. Long Days of Work. The Queen said she devoted from | 8 to 12 hours a day on her literary| work and that she enjoyed every min-| ute of it. “I love to toil,” said she. *“It brings me my greatest happiness.” The Queen is now completing the | fourth and fifth volumes of her life, | which probably embody the frankest and most revealing memoirs ever| left by any royal figure in history. | “All my life,” said her majesty, “I| have imposed upon myself a strong | self-discipline and a strict program ol‘ hours of work and recreation, which | 1 stick to rigidly. Yet I do not know | what fatigue is, nor ill health, nor| despair. I am still looking forward | to many fruitful years of life. Only| now, on the eve of my 60th birth-| day, .do I realize the full meaning| and richness of life.” The Queen said before she died she hoped to make a trip around the world, during which she would take occasion to stay longer in the United States and get a better appreciation of the American people and theirl achievements. Becoming introspective and somber, | she discussed the subject of religion end immortality. Syms Up Religion. “What do you consider the highest form of religion?” she was asked. “Love of one’s brother creatures,” replied the Queen quickly. “In that one word of ‘love’ all the religions | Even in chemistry and science there quaint Turkish villa on the shores of the Black Sea, where she is liv- ing quietly. STEPMOTHER INDICTED IN POISONING OF BOY West Virginia Woman to Face Murder Trial—Candy Made - Two Others IlL By the Associated Press. LEWISBURG, W. Va, July 27— Mrs. Conner Beller of East Rainelle will face a charge of murder for the death of her stepson Lloyd, 16, who died of poison he ate with candy. The Greenbrier Circuit Court grand ; jury indicted her after hearing testi- | mony of officers who arrested her in | April. The boy died in a Hinton hospital March 24. Lloyd’s two brothers, Paul, 14, and Murrell, 12, also were tsken to the hospital after they became ill at their home. They said they also had eaten the candy. and all the hopes and aspirations of mankind are contained. If we really stuck to that creed there would be no wars, no domestic unhappiness, no quarrels about religions or dogmas. “I think the quarrels about religion are the saddest thing we have in this poor old world. Every man has a right to his own belief as long as it makes a better man out of him. I don’t believe in church-going if im- mediately after we leave God's house we begin to calumniate our neighbor. If your religion cannot give you a kind feeling toward others, then you had better embrace another creed. Kindness, toleration and love not only have the quality of divinity about them, but they should be the guiding principles of all mortals on this earth. They may gain us sal- vation and immortality in the life to come " Unsure of Immortality. “Do you believe in immortality, your majesty?” she was asked. “I have no definite theory on the subject,” responded the Queen slowly, “but I cannot conceive of a man's spirit going into the grave with him. I believe that part of him is immortal. is a theory that all that dies must live again in some form. But the subject of immortality and of life is too infinite for a finite mind like mine to grasp. All we can do is hope for existence hereafter—pro- vided it be a happy existence!” Maryland’s Fifth Regiment To Display Flags at Armory Rededication Ceremony September -13 and 14 to Mark 121st Anniversary of Writing of ‘Star Spangled Banner.’ Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, Md. July 27.—The complete collection of 31 flags be- longing to the 5th Maryland Regi- ment will be on public display during the joint ceremonies marking the re- dedication of the 5th’s armory and the 121st anniversary of the writing of “The Star Spangled Banner,” Sep- tember 13 and 14, as a special fea- ture of the exhibition of the regi- ment’s trophies thaf will be held in the armory. Because of their combined historical and sentimental associations these flags are among the most cherished possessions of the regiment, according to Capt. Willlam T. Terry, chairman of the Publicity Committee for the Jjoint celebration. They were care- fully preserved under glass in the old armory for many years, and were rescued at great risk, Capt. Terry added, from the fire that destroyed ° the building in 1933. Two were lost, but as they happened to be among the less valuable ones they were easily replaced by replicas. The others were damaged by heat and water, but were restored as soon as possible by an expert renovation process. Civil War Souvenirs. Three of the collection are famous #s souvenirs of the first visit of a Tegiment from the South to any sec- tion of the North after the Civil War. In June, 1875, the 5th went to Bos- ton forythe Bunker Hill Oentennial celebration. This group includes a double-faced flag representing a map of the Upited States in the form of a pig, inscribed “Souvenier of Fete at Ri Farms, Wellesley Farms, Mass., June 19. 1875.” is one of a pair of guidons presented October 26, 1870, by Company A, 4th Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard, when it visited the 5th at its quarters here. Company A was part of a Northern regiment during the Civil War and its men, under Capt. John W. Ryan, were members of the Reception Committee that welcomed the Maryland soldiers when they went to Philadelphia the Summer of 1870 in the face of the bitter denunciation of the papers of that city; they were called “rebel volunteers” because many of them had fought for the South when the S5th disbanded as a result of difference of opinion over slavery.
