Out of these exhibits, | detalled reports were obtained on the results derived from 39 conducted in important trading centers in several States. The results were significant. A total volume of business at the 39 shows and within a few days afterward totaled $679,118. A total of 3.033,863 persons, by actual count, attended the 39 shows. Prospects to- taling 101,848 for building materials and home equipment were secured by 331 exhibitors. It was pointed out that there were no direct selling methods or solicitation applied in ob- taining these prospects, proving the value of a merchandise exhibit as a direct means of obtaining orders. Ac- tual orders for materials and equip- ment taken at the 39 shows by 242 exhibitors totaled 4.311. Of these. 226 exhibitors reported orders received totaling $362.243. The volume of busi- ness reported within a few davs after the shows were held totaled $316,- 875, with 114 exhibitors reporting. Gas heat as a major part of a cool- ing system may seem incongruous, but that is just what is being used in the new conditioning plant just opened at the Washington Gas Light Co. build- ing World War gas masks and air con- ditioning also seem like widely re- mote subjects, but the major element of the gas mask is also the heart of this unique cooling system. This material is a sand-like sub- stance called silicia-gel having the peculiar property of being able to ab- sorb up to 40 per cent of its own weight in moisture without any change in volume. On the other hand, after the gel has absorbed all this moisture, it is necessary to reactivate it with gas heat so that the process can be repeated over and over again This heat evaporates the moisture from the tre- mendously porous structure of the gel, enabling the material to be used in- definitely. First of Its Kind Here. The installation of gas air condi- tioning in the Gas Light Co. buflding is the first of its kind in Washington and visitors will marvel at the remark- | ably cool, dry atmosphere which is being supplied to the large first floor business office. The occupants in the other offices throughout the building are also able to work in air conditioned comfort, and there is mnoticeable ab- sence of the wet, clammy feeling which is s0 often encountered in arti- ficially cooled rooms. The air-conditioning machinery is Jocated in the basement and consists of two large cabinets, containing beds | of silica gel, gas heating equipment and blowers. There are also large banks of cooling coils connected to the cabinets, together with elaborate auto- matic control devices located in dif- ferent parts of the building and two | large air-conditioning units connected | ————— to two systems of supply ducts, thereby dividing the building into aepnrate:m"d’“"m"“ engineers claim that ex- zones.
