RTNANCIAL. BONDS BEAT TIME AS VOLUME LAGS Small Buying and Selling Orders Sufficient to Move Market. By the Assoclated Press NEW YORK, July 27.—The bond market capped a rather dull week by a general display of steadiness, but with volume unimpressive. The main body of corporate issues including some which normally are ectively traded, had thin markets Thus small buying or selling orders were sufficient to move prices half a pomnt or =0 in either direction. Pres- sure was negligible as evidenced by the preponderance of small gains. Several of the second-grade rails acted a little better than they had in Tecent sessions. Southern Railway 4s were bought up to 34%, making a eain of 14 points, and fractional ad- vances occurred in Southern Pacific 41:s, Nickel Plate 45sand St. Paul 5s. In loans of Alleghany Corp., Balti- more & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio and New York Central prices were a bit lower. Utility and industrial divisions were featureless, although firmness marked such issues as American & Foreign Power, Postal Telegraph and Youngs- town Sheet & Tube. United States Governments were still in a groove of narrow price changes. Treasury 2%s and Federal | 3s were down two thirty-seconds of By private wire direct to The Star. BY JOHN P. BOUGHAN, Associated Press Marke: Editor. CHICAGO, July 27.—Spectacular ' .| sudden breaking up of a brilliant | Spring crop prospect is just now the mnjnr market influsnce rmrdlnl wheat. Approximate unofficial estimates | are current that thes 1935 expected | bumper yield of domestic Spring | wheat has been cut in two by black | rust and by drought, making the loss in this country 136.000.000 bushels. Canada’s wheat crop losses are present figured tentatively as 100,000, | 000 bushels, and neither in this coun- | try nor in Canada has the damage | yet been halted. Crop experts find tnat the bla: rust, first discovered weeks ago near Springfleld, Ill., has apparently swept like wild fire througn the wheat flelds Northwest. Making matters worse are accumulating reports of much smaller | | | than were looked for. Market Goes Higher. Compared to one week back, the wheat market here wis 45,-57; cents higher this morning, with corn vary- ing from 1 cent decline to 1l ad- vance, oats -3 up, ana provisions showing a rise of 15 tu 53 cents. Inasmuch as black rust will be able to cause damage for one or two weeks crop experts are refusing yet to com- mit themselves as to the final harvest outcome. various quafters is attached to high premiums that are being paid by millers in all of the leading markets for hard Winter wheat especially de- sired for flour making. In this con- nection, particular notice is taken that the $1-a-bushel goal often sought by farmers has just been reached in Chicago by spot cash No. 2 hard Win- ter wheat, a usual contract grade for future deliveries. Rains Hamper Threshing. Aside from black rust, the latest disturbing ¢fop development is that rains almost dally in Ohio have greatly hampered wheat threshing and caused concern about damage to wheat in the shock. This wheat is reported as totaling about 25,000.000 bushels. Advices at hand are that unless Ohio receives clear weather hereafter and plenty of sunshine, the wheat in shock will suffer severe dam- age, 1f the harm is not dlready accom- plished. Corn values reflect rapid progress of the new corn crop. Oats prices have been hoisted a8 a result of buying on the part of previous speculative sellers. Likelihood of big decreases of Chi- cago warehouse stocks both for July and August is giving strength to pro- visions.
