FINANCIAL D.C. STORES LEAD IN JUNE UPTURN % Increase of 10.9 Per Cent Largest for Any City in Fifth District. BY EDWARD C. STONE. With another substantial gain of 10.9 per cent in retail trade in June, ‘Washington’s department stores led all other cities in the fifth Reserve district in business advances, as com- pared with the corresponding month & year ago, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond announced this noon. ‘The average gain for the 58 depart- ment stores in the whole district was only 5 per cent, while 531 stores in the entire United States reported an im- provement of 4 per cent, compared with June a year ago. For the first six months of 1935 the stores in the Capital did 12.1 per cent more business than in the first half of 1934, while the average gain for the fifth district was 5 per cent better than last year. Business in the 12 Federal Reserve districts averaged 2 per cent ahead of the like 1934 period. Winston-Salem, N. C. came the nearest to this city’s record of any city in this district in June and was a little ahead of the Capital in the six-month total, retail sales going up 13.6 per cent. Cumulative sales in some cities in the district showed de- creases both in June and in the half year, percentages comparing as follows with the similar months last year: Washington Stores Head List. United States - Y State figures: Virginia ____ West Virginia - North Carolina . South Carolina .. ‘The monthly retail trade report of the Federal Reserve Board was also made public today. In addition to the June gain of 4 per cent and the half- year advance of 2 per cent, the Re- serve Board said that from May to June there was little change in the dollar volume of department store sales, which usually decline at this season. Consequently, the Federal Reserve Board's index, which makes allowance for differences in the num- ber of business days and for usual seasonal movements, rose to 80 in June, on the basis of the 1923-1925 average as 100, compared with 76 in May and 74 in June, 1934. Percentage Changes Compared. Percentage changes in the dollar ¥olume of sales in June of this year end in the six months compare as follows with the corresponding periods in 1934, the Reserve Board says: 54 “June figures preliminary. In citice The MOR had one less business day this year than last vear. Only San Francisco and Chicagn @id better than the Richmond area in the first half year, the report shows. The trade pick-up was longer delayed in some sections of the West. That may account for the June gains in San Francisco, Kansas City and Min- neapolis. Receiver’s Collections Grow. Receiver Norman R. Hamilton re- ports that in the last three months $155,748 has been added in collections for the District National Bank. $50,000 has been added to the cash balance of the Potomac Savings Bank and 836,415 collected from amounts due the old Seventh Street Savings Bank. The quarterly report also shows 816,756 collected for the benefit of the Northeast Savings Bank. Collections for the Washington Savings Bank have also made excellent progress. $41,059 having been assembled in the period under review. While collections are progressing favorably in these five banks, no dates have been announced for the next payments to depositors. However, after expenses have been deducted, the money collected will eventually be paid to the former patrons who are anxious for more of the tied-up funds. The old District National has already paid 50 per cent to former depositors, the Potomac Savings Bank has distributed 50 per cent to date, while the Washington Savings Bank and the Seventh Street Savings Bank have already returned 80 per cent each to former depositors. The North- east Savings Bank holds the best rec- ord of all five, having paid 85 per cent in so-called dividends to waiting patrons. Brokers Expand Peports Heve.
