. HELP AND SITUATIONS. DAILY SHORT STORY- OUTSTANDING BY KARL “I'M GOING to be different,” Walter said. “I'm going to stand out from the crowd. I'm going to be great. I'm going to make you proud of me" He looked down into Mariel's upturned face and saw the radiance on her cheeks and the light of faith in her eyes, and sud- denly he laughed. Laughed from sheer joy and the feeling of power which warmed his blood. Laughed and drew her close to him and kissed her lips. To Mariel it was as if those words had never before been spoken. As if this promise, this boast had never before been made to a woman by a man who has just heard her pledge of love. Everything was new—life and love and the desire to achieve great things. Her arms tightened about him. He was her man, to have and to hold. She gloried in his words. “Of course, you will, darling. course, you'll do great things.” And so they were married. They spent two weeks honeymooning on an automobile trip through the moun- tains. A glorious two weeks, with love and laughter and youth and the thrill of belonging, one to the other, It was over at last and they re- turned to the city, hired a small apartment and moved into it. A short time was consumed in buying furniture, getting settled, calling on friends, receiving guests. But at last | it was over. They settled down to the routine of living, as thousands of other young married couples were living in that huge city, Becoming | a part of it all; gradually being con- sumed by the great, overwhelming system of existence that was life. Consumed? Suppressed? Not they. Not Walter. A month after the steady grind of routine had asserted itself he produced from an old trunk his drawing board and pencils. “It's my secret passion, honey. My great ambition. It's the thing that's going to lift us from the rut and | make us outstanding.” Mariel's eyes sparkled. She glanced over some of the drawings he had made. She looked up at her hus- band and her eves were filled with hope and faith and pride. “Oh, dar- ling; they're grand! I know you're going to be great some day. I know you are!” Walter kissed her. “It will mean | some sacrifice on your part, honey. We'll have to give up a lot of social activities, stay home nights so I can work.” “It's worth it, darling. Glad.” And so five nights out of the seven ' Walter stayed home and labored over his board with pencil and crayons He conceived a series of humorous cartoons with a thread of continuity | that was suitable for a daily news- paper. The “Funny Femmes” he | called them, and when the first seven | drawings were completed he showed them proudly to his wife. “They’re marvelous, darling! They're | Just grand! Send them off to a syndi- | cate and let’s see what happens.” Walter grinned at her enthusiasm and wrapped up his series and shipped them off to a well known “It's an idea I “It's probably no you might want to it—just for practtc of I'm willing. filled | | touched, GRAYSON. creased again. But this time he in- closed return post- age—and the new series was returned in shor order than the first. “But, darling,” Mariel argued. “All geniuses had the same thing to over- come when they first started. You've got to keep trying, over and over again. It's the only way. You're going to be great. I know you are.” “Editors aren't tists,” Walter said moodily. ‘How can they be expected to recognize genius?” “Editors recognize the things that will make money for them,” Mariel told him gently. “That's why they're in business—to make money.” But Walter wasn't so readily con- vinced. A month slipped by before he again attempted to develop his talent. And then he was prevailed upon by the gentle urging of Mariel—Mariel in whose eyes the light of faith and pride never faltered Walter felt sometimes, vaguely, that he was in- vested with a responsibility, a re sponsibility to justify that look. He tried again, spent added time on his new idea, and shipped it off with new hope, a hope now tempered by faint misgivings. This time the editors kept the things a month before | returning them. They inclosed a letter stating that the reason for the delay was because the manuscript had been ! misplaced and just come to light. Walter was plunged into the depths of despair. He was no longer indig- nant or outraged, but instead engulfed by a feeling of discouragement and shattered hope. He felt the city, the routine of existence, closing about him, consuming him, making him an insig- nificant part of the great scheme of things. Even Mariel became an annoy- ance. “We'll try again, darling. We're not licked. Nowhere near licked.” “We are!” Walter glared at her, savoring the relief resulting from his outburst. “We are licked! I'm just no good! There's no use going on! We're wasting time, when we could be living!" He turned away and Mariel let him go. She waited a month, and then Walter came home one night to find his drawing board and pencils on the | living room table. “It was an idea I had, darling. It's probably no good, but I thought you might want to amuse yourself with it—just for prac- tice.” She came to him and kissed him, kissed away the sullen retort lhnt rose to his lips. “All right,” he said. What's the big idea?” She spent the evening explaining it, | whetting his enthusiasm, assuring him of her faith in him and in the idea. And in the end, almost in self-defense, he agreed to work it out. During the two weeks that followed Mariel re- had.” said Mariel, oood. but I thought amuse yourself with or spend the evening elsewhere, and made | no mention of these invitations to Walter. At the end of three weeks the series was completed. But it was Mariel | who wrapped it up and mailed it to the syndicate. And when four days | later a letter arrived from New York | addressed to Walter it lay all day long at his place at the table, un- unopened. It was there syndicate. Secretly he felt pretty proud and satisfied. He began w, plan what they would do when the ! check arrived. But the inevitable happened. The syndicate shipped back the series with | & curt note directing him to inclose | return postage the next time he sub- | mitted anything. Walter was indig- nant, outraged, hurt and wholly con- demning of the editor who hadn't recognized genius when it was pre- ! sented to him. Mariel smiled and patted his shoul- der. “Try again, darling. Just because Funny Femmes didn't happen to be what they wanted doesn't indicate you lack genius.” After a while Walter agreed, though he couldn't see what use it was when | the Funny Femmes was the best thing | he could do. However, as the new series developed his enthusiasm in- | when he returned at night. He picked it up, glanced at Mariel and slit the envelope. There was no need to explain the contents of the letter, no need even to | announce the size of the check. Mariel knew by the look in Walter's eyes that at last they had won. There were tears on his cheeks when he enfolded her in his arms. It was a moment or two before he could speak. But even- tually he looked down into her up- turned face. “We've won, honey. told you I'd be great! I told you I would. Oh, I knew I'd stand out. I—I wouldn't have asked you to marry me if I hadn't been sure of it. Never!” Mariel squeezed his arm and smiled happily. “And, darling, I never would have married you if I hadn't known it, too.” We've won! I (Copyright. 1935.) SOVIET OFFICIAL BLAMES MILITARISTS, Russia's Vice Premier Says Coun- ty Not to Surrender Terri- tory to Japan. By the Associated Press. MOSCOW, July 8—A charge that Japanese militarists are provoking | “collision” in the Far East was made yesterday by Vlas Chubar, vice prem- | ier and member of the Polit Bureau, in an address to a huge crowd in the Central Park of Culture and Rest. Chubar’s accusation followed less than a week the delivery of the So- viet's sharp note of protest to Tokio against the alleged invasion of Soviet territory by Japanese in Manchoukuo. The note remains unanswered, and the whole situation has meanwhile grown more serious by the issuance of an ultimatum by Manchoukuo and Japanese Army forces Saturday de- manding the right to establish a corps of observers in Mongolian territory. The protest note gave warning, he said, that “we have an invincible army amply equipped with airplanes and tanks, and backed by powerful industry. In his address the vice premlerl said: - " “We can tell the incendiaries of a new world war that we will never give an inch of our territory to anybody.” Buried in Mink Coat.
