Mrs. Waley to Face Jury Kidnap Confession to Be Weighed in Historie Court at Tacoma. Mrs. Margaret Waley, 19-year-old wife of Harmon Waley, serving 45 years for the George Weyerhaeuser kidnaping, will have to stand trial in Federal Court July 5 before it can be determined if there is any legal truth in her insistence that she participated in the kidnaping. Prominent in the court battle will be United States District Attorney J. Charles Dennis (left), Federal Judge E. E. Cushman (center), who will hear the case, and John F. Dore (right), chief counsel for Mrs. Waley. THE EVENING ley's chief witness, according to her attorneys, will be her husband. The trial will be held July 5, soon after opening of the Summer term of United States District Court. The scene will be the same court room where throngs heard the war-time Maj. Cronkhite-Capt. Rosenbluth “target range death case.” On the bench will be the veteran Judge E. E. Cushman, often described as “stern but just.” Mrs. Waley's chief counsel will be John F. Dore, former mayor of Seatile and for long [, a colorful figure in Washington’s po- litical and criminal court battles. He's chubby, red faced, small—a lawyer of the old school who laughs and weeps with the jury, tantalizes opposing counsel. Associated with him will be Stephen J. O'Brien, ap- pointed by the court at Waley's re- quest. Opposed to Mrs. Waley’s counsel will be tall, spare, eiderly United States District Attorney J. Charles Dennis and his assistant, Owen P. Hughes, young, husky. blond and handsome. When Waley entered his plea of guilty and received his 45-year sen- tence, he declared his wife knew nothing about the “snatch” until two days after he and the fugitive Wil- TODAY and STAR, WASHINGTON, D. (., liam Dainard, alias Mahan, abducted George. This caused Judge Cushman to reject Mrs. Waley’s plea of guilt and insist she stand trial. —— GEN.
