Washington Wayside Random Observations of Interesting Events and Things. ‘WAR IN CHEVY CHASE. PROPOS this yarn about the wrens chasing the cats, the robins of Chevy Chase are conducting a merry warfare pgainst the squirrels which infest this ‘neighborhood. ‘The robins are the aggressors, and at the first chirp of a lookout, singly or in pairs, they swoop down on the squirrels, who invariably are forced to take to cover in the denser brush. ‘The robin attack is fashioned after the “power dive” of our military fiyers, and their swoops, beaks extended tc peck the intruders, often have force enough to dislodge a squirrel as he crouches close to the limb of a tree. Even after a squirrel is driven to the ground a single robin will continue the diving attack, following him across the ground. * ok k¥ AT YOUR SERVICE. With more than fifty modern hotels, the Capital ranks eighth among all cities in the United States in hotel capacity. * X X X HELD UNCONSTITUTIONAL. EVEN the unexpected “bang” of a firecracker does not ruffle for long | the good nature of Senator McNary of Oregon, Republican floor leader, whose cheerful smile frequently breaks through an afternoon of tedious de- bate. A day or two ago the Senator was discussing the legislative program with | newspaper men in a conference room when there came a loud report out- side a nearby window. It was one of those gentle reminders that the good old Fourth of July was approaching. On the portico outside the window stood a Senate page. It looked for a moment as though the youngster was in for a lecture. The Senator wasn't | smiling. But then he spoke: “Young man, isn't that unconstitu- tional?” A Senate page hears a great deal | about the Constitution nowadays, but | he wasn't prepared for this question. “You better read up on the Consti- tution,” the Senator advised as the youngster walked away, still a little puzzled. * * *x &k DIFFERENCE OF OPINJION. THE horse trough, gathering place for small boys and dogs, provides no end of varied entertainment, from burlesque to the higher categories of the drama. The other morning, for instance, a small wire-haired terrier stopped in his play to quench his thirst at the trough. He could just barely reach the water by stretching his neck un- comfortably over the edge. He was thus engaged, when a milk wagon horse came along and, with- out politely standing in line for his turn, began gulping down great quan- | tities of water. This served to lower | the waterline rapidly. The terrier, in an effort to keep up—or down—with it, finally landed full in the trough, to the surprise of principals and onlookers. The pup did his best to clamber out, but was involuntarily sucked toward the horse’s mouth by some unseen power. The horse, disgusted at find- ing foreign matter in his drinking ‘water, emitted a loud and long neigh and clop-clopped off. The terrier, by this time extremely brave, answered him with a series of barks, rather sharply, we thought. ‘Then, seeing as how he was already THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D.
