By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 15.—Iron Age, in its weekly summary, today reported steel production at a slightly lower rate. As an offset to this trend, how- ever, a further advance in steel scrap prices was noted. Mill operations were estimated at an average of 44!4 per cent of ca- pacity, compared with 45% per cent in the previous week. .The operating trends in leading steel manufacturing centers were-described as “conflicting and uncertain.” Regarding the rising trend of scrap ; prices, the summary said that swell- ing export demand, rather than do- mestic market conditions, accounts for the strength of the commodity. Steel output in the valleys and at Cleveland, said the review, “may be lifted before the end of the week by the release of orders that have been under suspension because of labor difficulties in the automobile industry. “Events alone can disclose how sharp this rebound will be, since it is believed that part of Chevrolet's pros- pective business was lost to competi- tors during the strike period. “The filing of iron and steel prices next Tuesday for third quarter de- livery is expected to disclose few, if any, deviations from current quota- tions. The view that price schedules will be generally reaffirmed rather than advanced is supported by the extension of present prices of rails and track spikes to September 1 for deliveries until December 31. “Railroad buying continues to lag far behind that of a year ago, al- though it is hoped that the Supreme Court’s decision in the pension case will cause carriers to adopt a more liberal attitude‘toward purchases.” Continuing its recent gain, the Iron Age composite price of steel scrap is at $10.67 a ton for the cur- rent week, compared with $10.58 in the previous week. Adjustments for the freight surcharge have brought + | the pig iron composite down to $17.83 from $17.90 a ton. For finished steel the average is unchanged at 2.124 cents a pound. %/GOLD FLOW TO U. S. FROM FRANCE CLIMBS By the Associated Press. PARIS, May 15. Heavy shipments of gold, estimated at between £27,000,- 000 and $30,000,000 in value have been sent to the United States from France during the last week, it was disclosed today. Banking experts asserted the world is now heavily buying dollars to meet commercial obligations and that there was some movement of gold from France as a result of the recent muni- cipal elections which showed a trend to the left. The government'’s budgetry difficul- ties in meeting an estimated deficit also are contributing to uneasiness. $1.46 A SHARE EARNED BY COLUMBIAN CARBON By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 15.—Columbian Carbon Co. and subsidiaries report for the first quarter net profit of $787,458 after charges, depreciation and taxes, equal to $1.46 a share on the common stock. This compares with $558,000, or $1.03 a share, in the same quarter last year. New York Cotton By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 15.—Cotton was quiet and ‘steady today on moderate trade support of nearby positions and commission house buying of later months, partly credited to the ac- count of the producers’ pool against sales of spot cotton. Outside buying was resisted as for- ward positions approached the 12-cent level, but the demand was sufficient to discourage selling. July contracts rallied from 11.88 to 11.93, and the general market at the beginning of the last hour was ruling about 1 to 5 points net higher. Futures closed steady, 3-12 higher. Declares Regular Dividend Of $2.25 a Share By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 15.—The Ameri- can Telephone & Telegraph Co. today authorized the usual quarterly divi- dend of $225 on the capital stock. The distribution will amount to nearly $42,000,000. The dividend is payable July 15 to stock of record June 15. While the company's income has continued insufficient to meet the re- quirements for the $9 annual dividend, financial quarters had been reason- ably confident that the regular pay- ment would be ordered. This expec- tation rested upon the company's steady gain in new telephones installed during the past year, in harmony with the general recovery trend. For the quarter ended March 31 net income was $30,097,288, equivalent to $1.61 a share, this compared with $32,- 992,340 or $1.77 a share in the first quarter last year. Increased labor and operating costs counteracted a con- siderable part of the gain in business. . SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. (Reparted by Chas D. Baroey & o) T Allis-Chalmers Co. 5s 1037 k¢ ‘Amer.
