Pleasant Association Sees Need for City-Wide Move. Zoning Clause Asked. | A proposal for a city-wide drive to maintain cleaner streets was indorsed last night by the Mount Pleasant Citizens' Association, meeting at the | Mount Pleasant Library. The practice of throwing waste | paper and trash on the streets was criticized by Dr. A. A. Chenay, who | said Sixteenth street and other thor- oughfares have become “filthy” with the litter of old newspapers and other | waste matter. Appointment of a special commit- tee to appear before the Commission- | ers and other citizens’ associations m‘ secure support of the movement was | directed in a resolution. M. W. Lewis, chairman of the Zon- | ing Committee, reported several resi- dences had been turned into apart- ment hcuses in violation of zoning regulations for Mount Pleasant. Un- der the present zoning regulations, no resident is allowed to “enlarge prem- ises for apartment use. A resolution | asking that this be changed to --sl-] tered” was introduced by Lewis. By the Associated Press. | Senator Wagner, Democrat. of New | York said last night in a radio speech | that much of the loss of foreign trade | by America was attributable to poli- | cles under which the United States barred products from foreign coun- tries by high tariffs. Wagner told his audience over !hp‘ National Broadcasting System that | after lending money with which other | nations might buy American goods, ! this country refused to accept com- modities from them with which they | could pay the debts. | “The trade policies which we are | now perfecting are just as protective to labor and industry as any th: have been followed in the past. But we are attempting to protect the right things rather than the wrong. “We are no longer protecting the inefficiency which can live only by artificial assistance and which is a drain upon the workers purse when- ever he buys the necessities of life. “The visible signs today that cur foreign trade is expanding are among | the surest tokens of general indus- | trial revival, r ployment and in- | creasing prosperity.” | Man Cleared After 20 Years. ] After serving 20 years in prison in | Portugal for alleged murder, M. Ra- | pozo has been found innocent. An- other man, arrested in Gouveia on a | minor charge, has confessed that he committed the murder for which Ra- pozo received a sentence of 28 years. As this is the second case in Portugal recently in which an innocent man was sentenced Portuguese newspapers | declare that it is a strong argument against reintroducing capital punish- | ment in the country.
