Twenty local artists received prizes 4n the Greater Washington Inde- Pendent Art Exhibition competition, 1t was announced last night. A total of 1,700 oil and water color paintings, drawings, etchings and sculptures, entered by men, women and children resident in the Capital, were judged by Ernest Lawson, aided by a com- mittee headed by Duncan Phillips. Robert Franklin Gates was given the Andrew W. Mellon award of $100 for his painting, “Chickens,” a barn- yard scene; Roy Clark a patron’s award of $50 for his “Church on the Hill” and Catherine Hammond a second patron’s award of $25 for her *Pyrenees.” “Self-Portrait” Wins $50. Karl Glockner’s “Self Portrait” was chosen for the District of Columbia Federation of Women's Clubs award of $50. Other prize winners were: Sculp- ture, Carl D.
