A—]8 ¥*» FINANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1935. FINANCIAL. [ ———————————————————————————————————— e e ———— SHARP TRADE RISE TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGEISI[][}KMRR[[}U[AR - INDICATED HER February Clearings Exceed Level of Year Ago by $11,864,356 Margin. BY EDWARD C. STONE. PFirst definite proof of how much better business was in Washington in the month now closing than in Febru- ary, 1934, came from the Washington Clearing House Association this noon in the monthly report of Manager Charles E. Bright. Bank clearings in the Capital in Feb- ruary totaled $60,956,281.30 as com- pared with only $49,091,924.34 in Feb- rusry, 1934, an advance of $11,864,- 356.96 over last year. Clearings for the short month of February were naturally not up to those of January of this year, when the total stood at $69,566,932.40. ‘Washington bank clearings for the first two months of 1935 totaled $130,- 523,204.70 in comparison with a total of $104,829,221.83, a jump so far this Jear of $25,693,982.87. Today's figures supply conclusive evidence of the steady business ad- vances being scored month after month in the Capital. Business is, no doubst, better. than the figures on canceled checks indicate. Since the metered service charges were put into effect in all of the banks. the number of checks drawn has shown a marked decrease, bank patrons paying a great many more bills with cash in order to keep down the extra check fees. In passing it is interesting to note that the February, 1935, figures are practically back to the 1933 February total of $61,012,252.58. Gas January Net $139,547. The monthly report of the Washing- ton Gas Light Co., filed with the Public Utilities Commission this morning, shows net operating revenue for the month of January of $216,610, com- pared with $227,823 for January last year, a decrease of $11,213. Operating revenues for January, $663,438, compared Wwith $616,853 for January a year ago, an increase of $46,585. Operating expenses, includ- ing taxes and uncollectible bills, in- creased $57,798, this year's figure being $446,828 against $389,030 in January, 1934. Non-operating revenues for Jan- uary this year, decreasing $5,994 from last year's total of $1,883 to show a loss of $4,111, resulted in a gross cor- porate income of $212,499, as com- pared with $229,706 for January, 1934, a decrease of $17.027. Interest deductions of $72952 for January, 1935, were $2.561 more than last year's figure of $70.391, resulting in a net income of $139,547, compared with $159,315 for January, 1934, a decrease of $19,768. Georgetown Earnings Up. The monthly report of the George- town Gas Light Co., also filed with the Public Utilities Commission this morning, shows a net income for Jan- uary, 1935, of $3,793, as compared with $2407 for January of last year, an increase of $1,386. Operating revenues this year were $153,892 as against $144,858, an in- crease of $9,034. Operating expenses, including taxes and uncollectible bills, increased $6,689, this year’s figure be- ing $14%5,672 against $138,983 for Jan- uary, 1934, Non-operating revenue decreased $1,724 this year over last year, re- sulting in a gross corporate income of $8221, compared with $7,600 for January, 1934, an increase of $621. Interest deductions decreased $765, this year's figure being $4,428 against $5,193 for January, 1934. How to Obtain Hotel Bonds. G. V. Railroad By the Assoctated Press. CHICAGO, February 28.—The Chi- cago Great Western Railroad, oper- ating 1,499 miles of track, linking Chicago, Kansas City, Omaha and Minneapolis, filed a petition to reor- ganize today under section 77 o! the amended bankruptcy act. The line’s petition, filed in Federal Judge Charles E. Woodward's United States District Court here, declared that the road was unable to pay $710,~ 880 interest due March 1 on its 4 per cent first mortgage bonds. ‘The court authorized the company to continue in operation under its present management, pending the submission of a reorganization plan. P. H. Joyce, president, said the 4 per cent first mortgage bonds con- stituted the line's principal secured liability. There were few unsecured creditors, he said. Once a $100,000,000 institution, the Chicago Great Western operates in Towa, Nebrasks, Minnesota, Missouri and Kansas. Many early gains of fractions to a point or 3 50 were cancelled or transformed into small losses. The trading volume dwindled appreciably. The alcohols were a firm spot, United States In- dustrial getting up more than a point. Continental Can advanced as much, United States Steel, Bethlehem, Gen- eral Motors, Chrysler and Santa Fe were fractionally lower. Transfers approximated 600,000 shares. Among shares up fractionally to around a point were United States 2 | Industrial Alcohol, American Commer- cial Alcohol, United States Smelting, Howe Sound, American Smelting, Santa Fe, New York Central, Ameri- can Telephone, Consolidated Gas, American Tobacco “B,” Liggett & Myers “B,” American Crystal Sugar, South Porto Rico Sugar, American Can, Case, Glidden, Johns-Manville and General Electric. United States Steel and Bethlehem were a trifle | easier, along with General Motors, Chrysler, Du Pont and Canada Dry Ginger Ale. Such issues as Mont- gomery Ward, Sears Roebuck and Westinghouse were virtually un- changed Most market commentators were still maintaining a cautious attitude toward equities, generally, although expecting technical rallies from time to_time. It was pointed out, however, that many potential stock buyers were not | inclined to expand commitments un- 1, 1 duly pending assurance that the recent | court setbacks received by the N. R. A. Administration will not compel the Government to drastically alter its re- covery program. Whether business can resume its forward pace in the face of doubts as to the legality of various New Deal plans was a matter of argument in industrial circles. While rail issues were being studied closely by transportation analysts, some cheer was found in the an- nouncement that the N. Y. Central had notified the I. C. C. it can meet 1935 maturities by extension and the sale of additional bonds. At the same | time the situation of the carriers was further stressed by the reports of the first 51 roads making statements for January which disclosed a 21.9 per | cent decline in net operating income | under the same month last year. | By the Associated Press.
