NEW YORK, February 28.—Bank clearings are again very high, espe- cially for a short week. The total for the 22 leading cities in the United States and for the five days ended ‘Wednesday, February 27, as reported by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc, was $4,607,889,000, against $4,256,779,000 for the same week of last year, an increase of 8.0 per cent. This con- trasted with a loss of 0.9 per cent in the previous week. At New York City, clearings were $3,114,861,000, an in- crease of 4.5 per cent over the amount S. | reported last year, while the aggregate for centers outside of New York of $1,493,028,000 was 16.3 per cent higher. At New York City, as well as at & number of other points, clearings for the five days this week were nearly as large or, in some cases, in excess of those for the full week preceding, U-land this notwithstanding the fact Per e 16.5 14 4-1 4-1 1 M that for the closing week of the month bank settlements usually are the - | smallest of the four weeks. Further- more, the total for the past week was less than that for the third week of February, which comprised six days, both this year and last, by only $647,~ 628,000, whereas a year ago for the same two weeks, the reduction was $1,- 039,322,000. O, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1935. ADVANCE IN AUTO OUTPUT IS SLOWER Retail Demand Continues Unabated, According to Trade Authorities. By the Associated Press. ‘DETROIT, February 28—Produc- tion in motor car plants continues on the upgrade, but the forward move- ment showed a slight tightening up during the last week. This trend in factory output led to the suggestion | oo in trade circles that the motor car manufacturers have begun to ef-| N fectuate their plan for spreading pro- duction over a greater part of the year to overcome seasonal unemploy- ment, There has been no slowing down of retail demand; in fact, some author- itles assert dealer requirements still | l are far from satisfied. On the basis of the known unsatis- fled retail demand the industry ap- parently could settle down to definite | i n 'y schedules that might carry on well into the Summer with only moderate | o; fluctuations, although the competitive factor in the low-priced fleld will be somewhat difficult to overcome. In this connection it is significant that the Ford Motor Co., which as a non-signer ef the automobile manu- facturers’ agreement is not pledged to the plans of other manufacturers, is increasing its production steadily and has announced a March program of more than 6,000 cars a day. The general expectation in trade circles has been that March would the output for February have not yet been complled, but on the hlll the weekly showing it appears that close to 350,000 units were assembled and delivered to rmfleu With the January output of 306,000 cars and trucks the aggregaje of 1,000,000 is assured. Production programs calling for 400,000 units in one month represent operations on & scale since May, 1930. Some shortage of materials has been reported in certain factories. Nevertheless, of 27 canvassed showed a decline in output, with 11 remaining unchanged. BY FREDERICK GARDNER, Assoclated Press Financial Writer. Pressure for expansion of bank credit is increasing as gold flows in from abroad and heavy Government spending continues. Since the end of 1934 the Treasury has issued in excess of $500,000,000 in gold certificates to the Federal Re- serve, mostly against imports of the metal. Results of Treasury spending and the gold inflow are apparent in a sharp rise in demand deposits and | reserves of Federal Reserve memberl banks since the turn of the year. Demand deposits of the member mn- stitutions in leading cities have in- creased more than $600,000,000 in the interval while reserves of the same banks rose approximately as fast.
