Funeral services for Capt. Ralph Walker McDowell, senior surgeon at Naval Hospital, who died there Friday after a short illness, were con- ducted this afternoon in St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, with Rev. Dr. C. Ernest Smith, rector, officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was to be in Arlington Cemetery, where Capt. Sydney K. Evans, chief of the Chaplain Corps, United States Navy, was to officiate at services at the grave. The funeral procession was to form at the Fort Myer gate. Capt. C, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1935, JOHN KIRBY DIES INHOSPITAL HERE Newspaper and Magazine Writer Contracted Cold at Berkeley Springs. John Kirby, newspaper and maga- zine writer, died yesterday at Mount Alto Hospital after a brief illness aris- ing from a cold contracted at Berkeley Springs, W. Va., where he was work- ing on a series of magazine articles. The former associate editor of Har- vey's Weekly was born in Washington 48 years ago, the son of Thomas Kirby, a contractor, and Ellen J. Kirby. He was a graduate of Georgetown Uni- versity and did his first ewspaper work here in the Washngton bureau of the old New York World. Mr. Kirby accompanied Gen. Per- shing’s expedition into Mexico in search of the bandit Villa. During the World War he entered an officers’ training camp and, although commis- sioned a lieutenant of field artillery, was still in training when the war ended. After the war he was associated for several years with George Harvey, pub- lisher of Harvey’s Weekly, both in America and when the latter was Am- bassador to the Court of St. James. Of laté he had devoted his time to magazine work. He is survived by a brother, Thomas Kirby of Chevy Chase, and two sis- ters, Katherine of this city and Flor- ence Kirby of Berkeley Springs. Corson & Gruman of Thirty-third and K streets, today was awarded a contract for $30,215 by C. Marshall Finnan, superintendent of the National Capital parks, for work in conjunc- tion with the completion of the west | end of the Arlington Memorial Bridge development. The contract provides for the con- struction of sidewalks and steps and the setting of granite, as well as mis- cellaneous work. The firm is expected to start work shortly. Mrs. Anna Stiles Chester, widow of Dwight Chester of Newton Center, Mass,, died yesterdey afternoon at the home of her son-in-law, Rear Ad- miral Emory Scott Land. Mrs. Chester, who was in her 83d year, had lived in Washington for a num- ber of years past and was widely known here. Her husband, president of the Newton Trust Co., died in 1914, since then Mrs. Chester had made her home much of the time with Mrs. Land, her only daughter, who survives. A, retired, veteran of many Indian and Philippine campaigns, died Satur- day at Walter Reed Hospital. Col. Johnson, who was 76, had lived at 2126 Connecticut avenue for several years. Born in St. Peter, Minn., Col. John- son was a graduate of West Point. His Army service, lasting more than 40 years, was spent chiefly with the 3d Cavalry. He was in command of Fort Hayes at Columbus, Ohio, during the ‘World War, retiring in 1922, Besides his widow, 'he is survived by two brothers, Brig. Gen. Arthur John- son, U. S.
