NEW YORK, February 25—The main body of the bond list moved lower today. Second-rate rails were forced down to new low levels for the current decline, and lack of support in other divisions made for a generally heavy tone in the late trading. U. 8. Governments conformed to the major trend, although there were ex- ceptions. Treasury 4%s rose 13-32 of a point to 116.13 and there were a few gains of 1-32 to 5-32. Other Federals were off 2-32 to 9-32. Losses of 1 to 2 points appeared in some loans of the Baltimore & Ohio, - St. Paul, New York Central and Erie. Utility issues also lost some ground. NEW YORK, February 25—Al- though easing off slightly toward the end of the week after reaching a new 1935 high last Monday, New York City bank stocks closed at higher levels, according to figures compiled by Holt, Rose & Troster. The total value of 16 leading issues aggregated $1,445,551,000 at the close against $1,439,602,000 on February 15. The 1935 high on Monday was $1,- 446.951,000. The current average yield of 5.39 per cent compares with a vield of 549 per cent on February 15. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 25.—The Western Pacific Railroad Co. an- nounced it would be unable to pay the semi-annual interest due March 1 on its first mortgage bonds. In a letter to stockholders signed by T. M. Schumacher, chairman of the Executive Committee, and Charles Elsey, president, it was stated “in the hope that within the 90 days of grace provided in the company's first mort- gage it will be able to submit a plan for permanent readjustment of its capital structure which will provide necessary new money and which will be acceptable to its security holders and other creditors, the company has laid the situation before the commit- tee representing the first mortgage bondholders under the 1934 extension plan, the Reconstruction Finance Cor- poration and other junior creditors * * * and will promptly undertake and continue negotiations for such a readjustment plan.” It was further explained that the company could not earn in 1935 the $2,464,505 due in interest and that payment out of cash on hand would unduly impair working capital. ‘ Washingtonfihange SALES.
