REAL ESTATE. DETACHED HOMES MOVE S PLANNED Model at Seventh Street and Pennsylvania Avenue to Be Inspiration. Indorsed by the Washington Cham- ber of Commerce, a movement to en- courage the building *of low-priced de- tached homes of high standard in the District will get under way next week under the auspices of the Washington Home Building League, with the con- struction of a small model home at the southeast corner of Seventh street and Pennsylvania avenue. Having for its objective the stimula- tion of employment as well as busi- ness in the building materials trades, the display house will demonstrate ad- vances made in small-house construc- tion and equipment and the practica- bility of securing high-class small- house design, finish and furnishings at reasonable cost. Pledges of Co-operation. Rossel Edward Mitchell, well known local architect, who is chairman of the newly organized league, said a number of leading business houses have pledged their co-operation in the con- struction of the model home, which will be built on land loaned for the pur- pose by the United States Government. Labor and material for the house is being donated. “We anticipate the enterprise will do much to bring about re-employment in Washington, with consequent resump- tion of purchasing power,” Mr. Mitch- ell said today. “More than $5,000 has been subscribed in labor and ma- terials alone.” Not a Duplication. ‘The effort, Mr. Mitchell said, is not intended to be a duplication of the work now being done by the Reno%e ‘Washington Campaign Committee. e movement to encourage repairs and remodeling of existing structures, he believes, is both timely and important, but there is a need also for small de- tached homes. The league plans to conduct at the model house, when it is completed, an information service for prospective home buyers. The site on which the house is being built has been placed at the disposal of the league for one year. Headquarters of the league are at Room 231, Woodward Building. Lumber Leader. “Every angle of the application of modern connectors for timber construc- tion should be given the closest scrutiny by producers of hard woods as well as soft woods,” says William M. Ritter of this city, vice president of the National Lumber Manufacturers’ Association. “This connector system, recently in- troduced by the National Committee on Wood Utilization of the Department of Commerce and the Forest Products Laboratory, strengthers the weakest part of any wood structure from four to eight times.
