10 ARCHITECT'S OFFICE -LOSESW. C. LYON Assistant Chief of Structural Engineering, Retiring, De- signed Huge Vaults. The new administration’s policy on getirement has just resulted in the loss to the Government of Wallace C. Lyon, aseistant chief of the Structural Engi- neering Division of the Office of the Supervising Architect. Mr. Lyon, who resides in Hyattsville, has been retired on reaching the statu- though hig retention m muuudd 10,;!“‘?:5 of the expert nature of his work and of his ex- perience. Mr. Lyon has designed virtually all the big vaults which Uncle Sam has constructed within the last several years, and was directing plans for the huge new vault now under construction in the northeast court of the Treasury Depart- ment Building. Difficult Excavation Job. In the construction of this new vault, the John W. Cowper Co. of this city has completed the difficult work of underpinning two of the heavy granite walls of the Treasury Department Building, and has virtually completed the job which was made doubly difficult by the fact that it was inclosed and could not admit power shovels. All of the excavating had to be done by hand and much of the dirt was taken out by sutomatic endless belt conveyors. Mr. Lyon designed the huge money vaults for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the new vaults at the Treasury and also the huge underground vaults in the United States Assay Office in New York City. Successor Not Named. No successor has yet been appointed. Among other retirements at the ‘Treasury was that of Eugene L. Russell, 63, who had been in the Government service more than 50 years. He entered the service as a page at the Capitol and since had been employed at the Bureau of the Mint. He resides at 1342 Clifton LIONS SEEK NATIONAL CONVENTION FOR D. C.
