BY BEER AND anBs; Chesapeake Bay Schooners anrl‘ Power Boats Kept Busier Than for Several Years. | Special Dispatch to The Star. . BALTIMORE, June 24 —A combina- tion of beer and crabs has greatly in- creased business on the Chesapeake Bay boats. | For one thing. traffic by bay schooner | and power boat has increased far above | the level at which it has been for the last several years. And a great deal of this has been attributed to beer. During the last two months the boats | have been arriving at Baltimore in ever- | increasing numbers, most of them load- ed with lumber destined to be made into beer cases and barrels. * ‘The greater part of the outbound cax- goes is found in fertilizer and in the carrying of cans to canning factories. FIRMS Informal Discussion Reveals Hopes of Average Men in Business. Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, June 24—What does the national indusirial recovery act mean to the average smal huskess man? " il Three small business men on a Staten Islacd ferry, en route to New York | City and business, discussed the matter quite informally. The first, who made forged grill work. had just purchased a new auto- mobile, his fiyst machine in five years. The second, an importer of gums, has just paid off the mortgage on his home. The third, who handles metal bearings, especially copper and brass, has made numerous small purchases |in the last month as a result of the pick-up in business. Received $10 a Day. “Back in 1929,” said the first, “black- Smiths here got $10 a day and refused ™| to work more than five days a week. Now they get $4 a day or less in this city and work three days a week. In 1929 I always made money. I have lost money on every order I accepted in the last two years. Certain Jersey forged grill workers always underbid | New York contractors. They are able to do this because they pay their blacksmiths $2 a day and sometimes even less. “We had a meeting the other night and agreed to raise wages to $5 a day. If the Jerseyites still cut in we'll have the law on them. Between now and 11934 I will make up for all my losses of the lest two years. That's why I bought a new car.” “The paint business has not been profitable in three and half years,” said the second. “When the pound sterling broke, I bought a lot of raw materials, only to have them on my hands for months. Then when the dollar broke, I rushed to get more stocks. Before doing so I made a trip through the West. Neither the retafler nor jobber had any supplies. I advised them to buy at once. Enough did so that I cleaned out my low-priced in- ventories, which never are very exten- sive, at a fair profit. Finds Gum Shortage. “Then I cabled Singapore for ship- ments. Slnflpore cabled back, ‘no gums available.’ By this time I began to get long-distance telephone calls from all parts of the United States for immediate gum shipments. I had no gum. Another Singapore cable in- formed me that 5 tons were available at_once. “Now the natives of Singapore know nothing about the United States going off the gold standard and even less about the industrial recovery act. Gathering gum sends them into the jungles. It is hard work. They never do it if they can work on rubber planta- tions. With rubber improving many of them got their rubber jobs back. Prices paid for gum gathering got 50 to be mle"l"‘h h: t . “The copper men have been trying to get together,” remarked the han- dler of metal bearings, “but so far not with a great deal of success. In May, however, we handled more tonnage and at better prices than in any month in the last 15 months.” (Copyright, 1933.) Chicago Grain By the Associated Press.
