The serum is usually con- sidered chiefly valuable in treating these two types. The great problem, now that the |32 serum'’s usefulness has been proved, the | doctors sald. is to develop a method for wider distribution of the serum, while ?merving the supply as much as gghs Ible because of its high cost. serum is manufactured by the Masss chusetts State Department of Health, Serum offers the only practical | 3 method of controlling pneumonia, which outranks all other infectious diseases except tuberculosis as a cause of death. Must Be Given Early. More than half the cases of pneu- monia in young people are type 1 or type 2, 80 it is advised that the serum be given even before it is determined what type has attacked a patient. It |3 must be given within the first four days of the distase, as it is of little | 3 value after that time, when the disease has become more firmly intrenched. ‘The serum tests were made through- | 5 out Massachusetts in 15 areas by 63 physiclans, chosen to try it on their pneumonia patients and report the re- sults. From 1931 up to May 15 of this year these physicians had treated 431 patients, of whom 218 had type 1 pneumonia and 51 type 2. The death rate for the entire group was 189 per cent, but among the type 1 cases the rate was 106. In the group of pa- tlents not recelving the serum the death rate was 259 per cent, more than twice that of the type 1 cases treated with the serum.
